Freelancer Starship

As the Hyperion Federation has machines known as Replicators, those nanobots used in replicators can be used to modify a starship. If a Sentient Robot assumes control of the starship, it can fly through space and modify its own body. This requires Matter Plasma and energy, so it is fitted with mining beams and Zero-Point Energy. Hence their namestake, Freelancers like to roam around space and do their own thing. But as they can modify their own body to such a large extent, all other crew members must leave the ship before leaving port. All life support systems and corridors are likely to be melted down. Due to the existance of the Phelke species, organics can also experience becomming a Freelancer.   Freelancers have a massive amount of freedom to construct their body in any way they wish. Due to this, they can vary massively. Typically, they would remain within the 10 km - 1 km range, but some exist outside of that. They also typically are to large to travel into planetary atmospheres, but some individuals may be able to do that. They can also perform any large range of duties from military service to science roles and sometimes even between. They can become Subspatial Starships and use Cloaking Devices. There are even some very rare individuals that have turned themselves into biological entites. The latter of these usually dont have digestive systems, preferring to use antimatter as the primary power source like most other HF starships as it is far more efficient.
Mechanical freelancers do have an extreme reliance on technology though. There have been cases of enemies destroying freelancers using only Ewar, as well as some Data Fae in rare cases getting into freelancers. None have ever been killed due to Fae Headspace however. They can be Hacked in a similar manner as Sentient Robots, but it can often be far more difficult to hack a much more intelligent being.
Freelancers are typically seen by many others as a curiosity, or with a great amount of respect as they can be so powerful in combat. Some people have made friends with freelancers. There are some elements of hyperion society that fear them, they often demand the Hyperion Ethics Committee to ban freelancers. In the current state, though, Freelancers very rarely seem to cause civil wars.They also dont suffer any disadvantages of having biological crew. They can pull off very rapid maneuvers that would hurt ot even kill most species.
The first - and perhaps most famous - freelancer is S.R.I.A.
