Cressund Town
Background
Cressund Town is one of The Towns and as such is populated by Townsfolks. These Towns all have several things in common;
- high stone walls to protect them from The Forces and heathens (Nomads) who exist beyond them
- a Church which follows the Religion of The Towns in the center
- a Town Square where public punishments and other events are held
Geography
Cressund Town is not quite the southernmost of the Towns but does sit closest to the edge of the Endless Forest, the woodland which marks the start of The Wilds. This proximity means that the walls are better guarded than those of towns that are further North. There are occasions when Nomads are permitted within the walls, but it is only for the purpose of buying and selling produce and always under the scrutiny of those who protect the Town.
The river which runs through and around it is called The Mercy. While it could be used as a method for transporting goods down to Laymond Town, this is rarely done, because parts of the river are dangerous and difficult to manage. It does, however, provide fresh water for Cressund Town and the fields of the surrounding farms.
The river splits the town unevenly in two. Those who live on the east bank, in an area known as The Right Hand, are mostly Men of Authority, as this part of the town is considered the best protected from the terrors beyond the walls.
The Town Square with the imposing Church in Cressund Town behind it is very much the heart of the town. It sees the heaviest footfall and every inhabitant of the town crosses it almost every day for one reason or another.
History
At the beginning of the Settling (in the Year of The Protector 2591), they had no way of knowing where their mission would take them. Indeed, even at the start of the Great Burning (Year of The Protector 2600 - 2603), they had no concept of how long the fire would last and how much of the forests they would be able to clear in that time. Their only focus at that time was to clear enough land to be able to build Towns enough for those who believed in The Protector and those they would be able to convert in the future.
The fire swept through the forests, only stopping at the Moss Dropp Ridge for lack of fuel to continue burning. By the time construction started on the area which is now known as Cressund Town one hundred years later, much of the forest around the top of the ridge had grown back, in no small part due to the efforts of the Nomads in that area. This meant that while Cressund Town was in no way planned to be the closest to the Endless Forest they were unable to build any further out.
The first stone of the church was laid in 2701 and the Town Walls were finally completed in 2774, making it the last town to be completed during The Settling. The laying of this final stone marked the end of The Settling Era and brought the Townsfolk into The Enlightened Age.
Cressund Town is also the birthplace of Chosen Ogburn who was The Protector's Cleric for three moons in 2961. During his extremely short tenure, he did nothing worthy of note.
'During his extremely short tenure, he did nothing worthy of note.' Hahaha. XD Great article about the town. I really like that the river is called the Mercy, and that the area behind the church is known as the Holy Shadow.
