Brummel House

Background

Cressund Town is one of The Towns in the Known World and as such is populated exclusively by Townsfolks. It is not quite the southernmost of the Towns but does sit closest to the edge of the Endless Forest, the woodland which marks the start of The Forests of The Wilds.   The river, called The Mercy, provides fresh water and transportation to other towns, but also splits the town in two. Those who live on the east bank, in an area known as The Right Hand, are mostly Men of Authority, as this part of the town is considered the best protected from the terrors beyond the walls. It is here that one can find Brummel House.

History

... and so it shall be as He decrees it, in that those permitted to build in The Right Hand of Cressund Town shall be limited to the immediate families of the following esteemed Men of Authority;
  • Mr. S. Sullivan,
  • Mr. R. Sullivan,
  • Mr. P. Hayward,
  • Mr. R. Brummel,
  • Mr. A. Simmons,
and none others until direction is given by The Protector in His Infinite and Infallible Wisdom.
Brummel House was one of the oldest residential buildings in Cressund Town. It is said by the Brummels that they laid the first stone the day after the Church in Cressund Town was begun. This is unlikely to be true, but it makes for a good story. It is certainly accurate that the Brummels are named among the few families who were allowed to build in The Right Hand, the most exclusive and well-protected part of the town.   Some could argue that it was built as the 'Home of the Town Crier' and should therefore pass to the family of the Town Crier, but as that has always been the Brummel family, the question has never arisen. Not all families on the list still occupy the same position they did when the town was first founded, but the Brummels have never slipped far enough for it to be a problem.

Building

The building itself is built of the same materials as many of the houses in this area. Large stone walls make up the majority of the ground floor, with wattle and daub used for the higher levels. While it was originally a thatched roof, it has since been replaced with tiles to reduce the risk of fires.
The interior can be easily broken up into three areas. First, there are the public spaces, designed to allow the Town Crier and his family to entertain guests. These consist of the dining room, parlour and study which occupy the front of the house on the ground floor and get the best light.
At the back of the house on the ground level and first floor are the family's communal spaces; a kitchen, a washroom and a casual sitting room. At the front of the house on the first floor and across all of the second are the five bedrooms; one master, one guest and three to be shared amongst the children.

Purpose

The house exists as a residence for the family of the Town Crier, and still acts in that capacity. It is the home of Ivy Brummel, her father and mother, and her five younger siblings; Clarence, Daisy, Alexander, Edward and Rose.

I don't know why but the Townsfolks always make me angry and at the same time feel kinda comfortable. Weird combination, but maybe it is exactly what you are aiming for. Lovely little article :)

I love when old houses have been kept in the same family for so long.
