Town Crier

History

In the before times, when the Townsfolks were still living amongst the Nomads, information was shared around a campfire, or in general meetings.
Moving into The Towns, they lost this communal area. People lived behind walls and information spread in a less productive and reliable way. The role of the Town Crier was sent to the then The Protector's Cleric by The Protector in a dream. It was decreed that each of The Towns would have its own Town Crier and that this would be a respected and important position who would work with the Town's most senior Cleric from the Religion of The Towns.

Role

The role of the Town Crier is to ensure that information is passed down to townsfolks in a useful and approved way. This includes:

• Regular meetings with the Town's most senior Cleric to:
• gather new information
• pass on information he has gathered
• Daily walks through the Town, shouting out announcements
• Gathering and recording useful information
• Taking coin from those willing to pay for mentions in the daily announcements

It should be noted that this role is exclusively available to men, as they are the only ones trusted with such information, and with loud enough voices. It would be very unseemly for a woman to hold such a position and would never be allowed.

Reputation

The Town Crier is one of the Men of Authority, a highly respected position and a powerful one.
While they are obviously good and pious men who are as incorruptible as any man might be, they have a reputation for being a bad person to get on the wrong side of. They have the ear of the cleric, as well as the ear of the Town they live in. Someone who upsets a Town Crier can expect to have their dirty laundry aired for the whole Town to hear and may see themselves on the wrong side of the Church as well.
