Mr Simmons
Background
Appearance
Mr Simmons is a relatively non-descript man in his early fifties. He has unexceptional brown hair, brown eyes and a nose with the potential to be bulbous. He stands just shy of 5ft 8 inches tall and has a widening waistline which matches the quality of the meals he eats with his customers. He chooses his clothes carefully, smart and costly garments which are still understated and carefully express his position just below the Men of Authority.Origins

How He Sees Himself
Mr Simmons believes that he is owed more than life has given to him and that he is, therefore, well within his rights, to take what is due. He was raised listening to the stories his father, Mr F Simmons, told him about how they are direct descendants of one of the few Men of Authority who helped to settle Cressund Town. If things had worked out differently, they would still be at that elevated status, living in the richest part of the town and looking down on everyone else. Instead, he is stuck in a limbo of sorts; disgusted with those of his own rank and lower, who he considers common, and despising those above him who have what should be his."What harm could there be in another flutter?"
Profession
Mr Simmons inherited the betting shop from his father and has worked hard to build it up to everything the old man dreamed it could be. Beyond the gambling which his father established, he has added regular fights which he hosts in the basement. These are sometimes animal-on-animal fights but are most often two men from the town being paid to beat each other black and blue.
In more recent years, Mr Simmons has learned the true value of information and has added blackmail and extortion to his list of revenue streams. He is aided in this endeavour by his wife, Elizabeth, who is 22 years his junior, and their two children, Madeline and Patrick, who are small enough to fit into the hidden passageways in the house and are smart enough to remember and write down everything that they hear.
Ambition
"A drunk customer is worth three times a happy one."
Mr Simmons is determined to return his family to the glory of once more being a Man of Authority. He is willing to lie, steal and worse in order to make this come true. He loves his family dearly but would be willing to sacrifice Elizabeth and Madeline to see Patrick elevated to that high status. So he takes what he can from those who visit his betting shop; their money, their secrets and their dignity, holding them close until the day comes for him to enact his plan.
I love the idea of the kids scurrying around the hidden passages.
