Aetherstinger Species in The Wheel | World Anvil

Aetherstinger

The Aetherstinger is a psychic, spindly insectoid creature indigenous to Autumna. Although their length varies, adults are typically about 2.5 meters long. Known for their unique and lethal reproductive cycle, Aetherstingers were almost driven to extinction during the Aetherstinger Extermination of 1653-1732.

Description

Aetherstingers are notably insect-like in their physicality, characterized by their six elongated, spindly limbs and segmented, chitinous bodies. They possess a pair of large, luminescent eyes, which assist in their navigation of Autumna's diverse environments. At the end of their sleek, elongated bodies, they have a large, pointed ovipositor, used in their distinctive reproductive process.

Behavior

Aetherstingers are solitary creatures, and with the exception of their reproduction, they show little interaction with other species. They are primarily nocturnal, and are known to inhabit areas with dense psychic energy.

Reproduction

Aetherstingers reproduce asexually in a unique and highly lethal process. The Aetherstinger projects its eggs into the head of a host organism through psychic means. Once inside the host, the eggs hatch into larvae which consume the host's brain. This process invariably results in the death of the host. The larvae then metamorphose within the host's body, and emerge as fully-grown Aetherstingers.

History

Aetherstingers played a significant role in Autumna's history due to their lethal reproductive process. Their threat to Autumnan civilization led to the Aetherstinger Extermination, a massive coordinated effort spanning nearly a century (1653-1732), with the goal of eradicating the species. This campaign was largely successful, reducing the Aetherstinger population to near-extinction levels.

Present Day

In the present day, Aetherstinger sightings are extremely rare, leading many to believe that they have been completely eradicated. However, rumors persist of Aetherstingers surviving in the unexplored and inhospitable regions of Autumna.
