Squall's End

Squall’s End is a city in crisis. The city has vanished from where it was, and finds itself somewhere… else. The city council has mobilized any aspiring adventurers to learn more about the world around them. As near as anyone can tell, the city and about 50 miles radius around it just simply moved. Having the area around the city move was a blessing - the farms that supply much of the city’s nourishment are within that radius. And the city is still a port city, so fishing continues, even if the fish are not the same as what they were catching where they used to be. The climate that the city finds itself in is similar to the one they left - temperate forest for the most part, although no one knows what the change of seasons will bring. Even the river that flows through Squall’s End lined up with a river in this new location - or at least close enough that the river yet flows. Scholars in the city debate what happened and how, but they seem to agree on a few things:
  • They are in a different world - no constellations in the night sky are familiar to any scholar or sailor.
  • The world they find themselves on may be on a completely different plane of existence - the voices of the gods seem somehow muted here, although not silenced.
  • The basic physical laws of the world are the same, or at least similar enough that the differences are academic and not practical.
Meanwhile, while scholars debate and politicians organize, the citizens have noticed some strange things. In the park/square that serves as the town center, there are 4 blocks that look like they are designed to hold statues, but they are all empty, and no one can remember if there was ever anything there or not, and if not, why the large stone blocks were put there in what would appear to be places of honor. But such mysteries, and the greater question of exactly what happened are secondary to determining if there are threats to the city in their new surroundings. Those who have a penchant for such things are being sent out to investigate the land and the seas around the city to determine just how much things have changed, and if the city needs to be preparing itself for attacks or even war.   Groups of those who are looking for adventure are being sent out to find resources, determine what and who is out there, and map areas. The city council is paying in supplies or bricks of valuable metals, not being sure of the value of their currency any longer, although the businesses in the city are still honoring the coin of the realm for transactions.   Many groups seek to make a name for themselves, but the city council is very wary - they do not want to hire groups who are in it more for themselves than for the community.   Among the key happenings since the event:
  • The Squall's End City Council has commandeered all the boats that were in the harbor when the event occured. Under normal conditions, this could be construed as an act of war, but since there is a belief that none of the foreign powers whose boats have been claimed are on this world, that is of much less immediate concern than using those boats for exploration and fishing to support the city. Many of the sailors themselves are not overly concerned, as while exploration might be a little more dangerous than plying the merchant's trade, they are still getting paid for their time.
  • A woman has started singing in The Yellow Chimera tavern. She wears a wrapping around her eyes. They say that no one sees her arrive, but that she periodically sings haunting songs that seem prophetic. Who she is and why she chooses that tavern to sing at, or why she appears on the days she does, is a mystery.
  • The head of the town guard has assumed a role more like the leader of a military organization, making some worried about the possibility of martial law.
  • Some of the outermost farms have reported sightings of figures at dusk, generating worries of predation on livestock and crops.

Government

The mayor, an elected position, leads the city council. The city council has 5 members. On most day-to-day matters, the mayor simply makes decisions advised by the city council. For particularly large things, the council sometimes votes. The mayor counts as 4 votes, and each member of the city council counts as 1. In this way, a unanimous city council can actually overrule the mayor, but it takes only 1 supporter on the council for the mayor to carry the day.

Infrastructure

Squall's end is a maritime city. The port is its lifeblood. In the new environment, however, in the weeks it has been here, there have been no new boats arriving. Fishing and exploring are common activities for the ships that come and go from the docks of Squall's' End today.

Districts

The neighborhoods of Squall's End are:
  • Charplace - In the north-center of the city, Charplace is known for inns and taverns. Many more well-off travelers used to stay here. It is also home to the city's largest graveyard.
  • Coldside - To the west and north of the river as it takes its bend. The warehouses of Coldside store products on their way in and out of the city, and away from the river towards the North Road, there are residences.
  • Meatport - to the south of the river's mouth is Meatport, where the docks and markets specialize in perishable goods.
  • Six Bowls - the part of the city to the east of the river. Businesses that are not focused on shipping and government of the city are based out of here.
  • Sunset Port - the most welcoming and famous of several port districts in Squall's End. Most of the trade here is in non-perishable or at the least having a very long shelf life.
