The Red Shield

The Red is a smithy in Squall's End which has been run by the Steelstone family for six generations. The Steelstones started the forge about 120 years ago, when Squall's End was a much smaller community, and at the time mostly made farming implements, hoops for barrels and sometimes rudders or other parts for ships. In more recent years, they have shifted their business model to also support the adventuring trade that had come to Squall's End. As such, they tend to carry a reasonable selection of weapons and armor.
The current owner of the shop is Anders Steelstone, and he and his workers are standing at the ready to help the Squall's End City Council with whatever metal fabrication needs they have. Like many merchants of the city, the Red Shield still honors the coin of the realm, although with his supply of ore and coal cut off, Anders is also willing to barter for goods.
The Red Shield is recognizable by the red metallic shield hanging over the door to the shop.

Purpose / Function

The Red Shield was built as a forge/smithy and continues to fulfill it's intended purpose.

Alterations

At one point, Gilliad Steelstone purchased the shop next door, and now the original building functions as a forge, with the building next door being their storefront. This happened around 50 years ago, and most customers agree that it is a more pleasant arrangement, with customers not having to deal with the smoke and heat of the forge, although some do miss the warmth in the winter.

Architecture

The forge building, the original Red Shield, was constructed entirely of stone. Their next door neighbor that Gilliad bought out had built their shop of wood and stone. The connecting breezeway is made of stone. The Red Shield's forge building is tall enough to have a second floor, but that is to give the forge's smoke somewhere to go. The shop side does have a second floor, which functions as a dormitory for several of the forge's and shop's workers.

History

A forge with a 120 year history of serving the needs of Squall's End, and a past of adapting to the changing needs and demographics of the growing settlement.
