Session 16: The Green Black Forest Report

General Summary

Grimmaz (and Kulug) goes to enter the pathway to the north of the swamp they are standing in. Before they do a Northman rushes out of it with sound being made behind him. He bolts over and hides in the hut's ruins, and is swiftly followed by five Saxon Fyrdmen. Grimmaz has drawn his battleaxe drawn and ready to fight along with Kulug. The Northman casts a spell to sicken one of the Saxons, causing the Saxon to vomit & defecate at the same time as if he has had a sudden severe bout of food poisoning. From there Grimmaz & Kulug enter the fray and a further two Saxons are cut down. From there, the Saxons try fighting back but a further two are hacked to pieces by Grimmaz, while Kulug, as usual, misses. The Northman throws a handaxe killing the remaining one who he made sick.   Afterwards they introduce themselves and the Northman's name is Bjorn Skard, and a form of magic user. His Norse raiding party was devastated in a raid in Old Saxony and he got stuck there trying to make his way. Ended up going south. He takes a look at the markings on the floor of the ruins (using his Arcane ability), sees it's a form of Sylvan, and takes a rubbing of them. All three decide to take a trip down the northern pathway, and Bjorn informs Grimmaz of a Saxon camp he tried to skirt round but some of the Saxons seemed to be different than normal, and smell & hear him. They chased him into the forest. Also, he informs Grimmaz of a hut/cottage structure in the forest to what is on the right of the path now. It seems in use, and herbs are being grown beside it.   When they travel down as far as the cottage they decide to look at this and see some movement in the surrounding bushes & trees. A woman in her mid 50s walks out and introduces herself as Rofsind. She invites them in and says she was aware of them coming due to protective wards she had placed around the area she lives in. They see she is a magic user herself, and looking at protective wards around the inside of the cottage Bjorn notices what looks like iron rubbed into one top of the door frame. He deduces that it is to prevent Fey from coming in to the property, with the Fey being harmed & afraid of iron. Grimmaz begins drinking a beer and making something to eat for everyone. Rofsind is shown the rubbings by Bjorn and is told it refers to it only being opened by turning a small pointer on top to a double moon carving then doing that again. It says in Sylvan, that only in darkness can it be opened, and is a misnomer, as the moons symbol represents the darkness of night. This is to waste peoples time, and the witch is a Hag called Auntie Grimly, and she prefers to come out at night as she hates bright light especially the sun. She is also the creature that gave out bargains, tokens and such-like to the Saxons and giving them both what they wanted & increasing some of their senses. Killing her would cut down on wolf attacks and break the curse on anyone she bargained with, making it easier to attack the Saxon camp.
