Klaus Gets a Shock Plot in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Klaus Gets a Shock

The team gets the chance to carry out a heist. Eleia's 'favourite' handler Klaus has decided to request some goods to be delivered to his office in Orleans, making the mistake of it going through Eschbach.

Plot points/Scenes

A trade caravan goes to stay in Eschbach and the Thieves of Frankia have took a sneaky look at the cargo. It turns out that it contains two expensive rugs (worth 250 gold each) & a writing desk (worth 150 gold) along with a small pouch of 3 emeralds (300 gold each) & 2 rubies (worth 350 each) carved in a way to fit jewellery. All of these are destined for Orleans along wit hthem being marked for somebody called Klaus at the de Rais estate, and come from Constantinople. The thieves pass this information to the team asking that the Guild gets a 10% cut of the goods worth.   They can way lay this shipment at any time though this is likely tempting to Eleia overall.   The wagon's staff and merchant is staying at The Eschbach Shields The merchant is named Robere De Langond, a portly man with a large nose and a dutiful merchant. The rest are 4 staff used for dealing with the wagon (loading, unloading, inventory, and general maintenance & the horses as part of their duties), and 6 militia guards out of Orleans.   The team can interact with these and try to bribe, coherse, threaten them all the while trying to find where the goods are. The goods are stored in a secret compartment in the floor of the wagon, and protected by a Ward of Lightning as well as three keys. These keys are large, middle & small in size and amongst other keys on the belt of the merchant. All three are to be placed in the correct keyhole to avoid the Ward of Lightning. The locks can be picked but will set off the Ward, and the Ward is hidden though it can be searched for. The keys act as a counter to it switching it off. The whole of the compartment is protected against fire, cold, acid, piercing, bludgeoning & slashing.   The keys have to be placed in a certain combination & turned all at the same time. It goes medium, small, and finally large.   At the same time it's being kept at the stables behind the Eschbach Shields.   They will have to work out how to get at it, the keys and the people. Two guards will always be within sight of it and two within sight (usually) of the merchant. The group will be staying two full days while the caravan is resupplying. After that, they will travel to the west, clearing the bottom of the Central Massive a day or two after that and arriving in Orleans.   How the team wants to handle this is up to them. They can:
  • Steal the keys and.or lockpick the wagon at the inn. This will require slipping past guards and finding a way to get the goods out undetected.
  • Commit highway robbery. They can rob the wagon on the road.
The former will require them finding a solution to avoiding the local authorities as it still against the law for theft in the town. The latter is simpler as less chance of being caught though the goblins they helped may see them and demand something to keep their mouths shut.   Either way, they need to secure the goods somehow, either by taking the parts they want themselves and keeping them for personal use, or selling them. Since the items are 'hot' and can't be sold on the open market they may need to sell them to or through the Thieves of Frankia.    Another option would be to demand some type of ransom of Klaus, and that they can get a payment for the items return.
