The Clone With No Name
This started off with just a story premise that I thought I might suggest to someone else, but then I thought that I might be able to set it in the Trident Coalition universe, which I had already written about, and use some already existing characters, from previous stories. The basic idea was:
Yojimbo meets Twelvth Night, in outer space.
I wasn’t even sure that Kurosawa's and Shakespeare's stories even could be combined, so I wrote the first draft to find out. In the process I found myself falling in love with my protagonist Cedric Bourbon who I created to be both the ronin from Kurosawa’s film and Viola, the cross dressing female protagonist of Shakespeare’s play, so I have since written him into more stories, and in a couple of places plan to rewrite the next drafts of other stories to make room for him there. Did I succeed at combining the two stories? Yes, and no. I tried to include elements from both, and did to some extent, and may even keep some of them. The result is a fairly unique story where the third act finale resembles neither of the original stories. I don’t even know if it would be necessary to mention them if I were to publish the story. The one thing I would change would be to include some element of cross dressing.
