Captain Etheridge Dillard (a.k.a. Ridge)
The Captain of the Tranquility was himself shanghaied into service as a deckhand on a freighter at age fifteen. It didn't take him long to take to the life of crime as a smuggler and pirate, and at age twenty he narrowly escaped when the rest of the crew were caught by Orbital Patrol of the Egyptian world Osiris, where he stole an Ibis Class ship from Busiris spaceport and named it the Tranquility.
Within a week, Ridge had gathered a loyal crew of his own but wanted to try his hand at Shanghaiing someone the way he had been shanghaied himself. He went to a bar in The Slice of Aphrodite and looked for the right teenage boy to make a combined deckhand and cabin boy. However, most boys in the Coalition know better than to accept drinks that are spiked with drugs. While Ridge was trying to get a boy with the same dark skin as himself to accept the drink, a white orphan boy, who thought Ridge was in charge of the Brothel Barge, came up to him, went down on Ridge, rode him and took a generous swig from the drink, after announcing that he knew the drink was drugged, shamed Ridge for trying to covertly abduct someone against their will, but that he, Alex, was willing and expected to wake up on the Brothel Barge. The boy, Alex Franco, woke up in Ridge's cabin and after a lot more sex they were a couple and it really was Alex who shortened Etheridge to just Ridge.
