Thavius Kreeg

High Observer Thavius Kreeg

Thavius Kreeg was the last High Observer of Elturgard and the leader of the Elturian Cult of Zariel in the years leading up to and during the Damnation of Elturel.

History

Early Life

Thavius Kreeg was born in 1448 in Elturel, the year following the chaotic Reign of Vampires. Kreeg joined the church of Torm at adulthood, the church itself receiving quite a boost from High Observer Cathasach Restat's support.   Over the next decade, Kreeg began making large strides in the church, becoming very well known. AS High Observer Restat began getting older, and his health declining, Kreeg was considered a potential successor.   In 1481, Thamal Thent, the head of the Order of the Companion and most likely successor to Restat, disappeared along with their Hellrider retinue outside the settlement of Boareskyr Bridge. Due to the Thent's absence, Kreeg was given the role of High Observer when Restat passed in 1483.   However, during this entire time Kreeg was actually a member of the Cult of Zariel, which had infiltrated most areas of Elturian government as well as most leadership positions of the Order of the Companion. The cult was behind the death of Thent, which gave the Zarielites two major victories by making Kreeg the head of Elturgard and replacing Thent's leadership of the Order with Janfire Mistmore, another Zarielite, effectively allowing the cult to dominate Elturian politics from the inside.

High Observer of Elturgard

As one of his acts as High Observer, Kreeg ordered the construction of Fort Thamal outside of Boareskyr Bridge, to honor the fallen commander and safeguard the area.   Kreeg's rule was predominately focused on outwardly unifying Elturgard in culture and purpose. The role of Unity Prayers were expanded, becoming more common even in religious institutions, and Unity Tributes began appearing in cities other than Elturel. However, these acts were actually done to undermine the role the various gods played in daily Elturian life, replacing their worship with that of the Companion, and thus spiritually compromising Elturians for their eventual damnation.   Kreeg also began replacing all the highest leaders of civilian government, the Order of the Companion, and the Hellriders with Zarielites, having many of them sign person contracts for power with devils upon the city's future descent into Hell.   Shortly before the Damnation of Elturel in 1497, Kreeg arranged a meeting with Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard in Elturel's High Hall to settle tensions between Elturgard and Baldur's Gate. Once Ravengard had arrived, on the 2nd of Eleasis, 1497, Kreeg snuck out of Elturel with the Shield of the Hidden Lord, which had been advising the Cult of Zariel since the Reign of Vampires. As Elturel and everyone inside the city was dragged to Avernus, fulfilling the terms of a fifty-year old pact, Kreeg made his way to Baldur's Gate, where he was housed by Duke Thalamara Vanthampur, the leader of that city's Zarielite cult.   Before Kreeg could plan his next move, though, the Vanthampur Villa was raided by the Lost Star Detectives on the 16th of Eleasis. When Kreeg was discovered by the adventurers, he was summarily executed by them. Rewarded for his loyalty to Zariel in Hell, Kreeg was then reborn as an amnizu general for the infernal Blood Legions.
