Unity Prayer
A Unity Prayer was a legally required prayer that was given before nearly any event in Elturgard during the nation's existence from the mid to late 15th century CR. While the exact contents of a Unity Prayer differed, each one required officials to give thanks to the Companion before any other god, so that Elturgard would never risk becoming divided along religious lines. They were introduced during the reign of High Observer Cathasach Restat.
Though only legally mandated before non-religious events, over the years many of the churches in Elturel adapted to opening their services with a Unity Prayer.
While ostensibly done to foster a shared sense of unity and patriotism, the true reasoning for the Unity Prayers' adoption was to undermine Elturian faith in the gods of Toril so as to prevent their intervention upon Elturel's Damnation in 1497. Following Elturel's salvation in 1498, Unity Prayers were abolished.
A typical Unity Prayer might look as follows:
Before all, we give thanks to the Companion, whose light gives us the bounty of the fields and shields us from the dark; whose eternal presence is a constant ally against all those who would threaten Elturgard. Let all those who stand within its blessing remember that it is a beacon of righteousness, which we will follow to our greater glory.
