Forest Research Institute

This institute is dedicated to studying the Forest in the hopes that understanding it can lead to increased safety and preventative measures.

Projects

The institute is focused on three primary main projects of research.

Bloodsap Tree Lifecycles

Which came first: the bloodsap tree or the uhaaki? This is one of the guiding questions of the Institute. To this end, they collaborated with the Border Rangers to acquire a bloodsap seed and then planted it in a anaesthetized deer's body within a secure greenhouse. Using this as a a subject, researchers study how the deer's and tree's luas interact and how it grows.

How Mutation Occurs

What process causes a living creature to mutate when they ingest bloodsap? Using bloodsap collected from their subject tree, researchers infect a variety of test animals to observe the rate at which mutation occurs, how quickly changes come on, and test attempts at interupting to reversing the mutation (so far, none of been successful).

Ways to Detect Bloodsap

How can quarantine methods better keep infection out of safe areas? The current method to control infection is quarantining anyone who has been in the Forest for 5 days. After this period, if signs of infection haven't appeared, they assumed to be safe. The Research Institute is working on methods to detect the presence of sap in the bloodstream before infected symptoms appear.
Torren Microscope
The earliest microscopes reached Veiama only a few years before the crisis with the Forest began. Further scientific advancements went on hold as society restructured. One of the Forest Research Institute's first projects was to advance the capabilities of microscopes.   Their new lenses allow the viewer to see living cells. Infected blood can be identified by observing the presence of sap in the blood. However, there are still limitations in the use of this technology to maintain safe zones. By the time sap has spread enough to be found consistently in all blood samples, the subject would clearly already be infected.
Detection Alarms
The most recent development is an enchantment that will cause iasite to glow in the presence of bloodsap rather than water. This is still a work in progress. Although the basic enchantment works, there is much work to be done to figure the range, how often the enchantment needs to be re-applied, and what amount of bloodsap it triggers for.
