A Time of Rest Spell in The Savage Woods | World Anvil

A Time of Rest

This is a chant for putting the listener to sleep. Anyone who hears it, other than the chanter playing it, begins to feel drowsy. It takes about 30 seconds of uninterrupted playing for listeners to lose consciousness, but they become progressively groggy as the time wears on. While asleep, the enchanted person cannot be awoken with any stimulus.   A Time of Rest is one of the easiest chants. Even non-magical music can put people to sleep, so it doesn't take much effort to bump that into an enchanted sleep. It is one of the first chants taught to students at conservatories.   The basic theme, which is around 30 seconds long, will keep the listener asleep for about an hour. Chanters can extend that by playing additional variations of the theme. The longer the chanter plays, the longer the person sleeps, but with diminishing returns.

Use

A Time of Rest is often used by physicians to aid patients suffering from insomnia. If the enchanted person is exhausted, they will continue to sleep even after the effects have worn off, but it will be a normal sleep.   It is also used by physicians to aid medics performing surgery, as long as it is a short and simple surgery. Longer surgery will want to use Sleep of the Dead instead, which is more challenging.   It has historically also been used in combat to put enemy soldiers out of commission.
