Sleep of the Dead Spell in The Savage Woods | World Anvil

Sleep of the Dead

This chant is an advanced form of A Time of Rest. Where that one is easy to perform and puts someone to sleep for up to three hours, this one is challenging, should only be attempted by masters, and can put someone to sleep indefinitely.   Someone put to sleep by Rest will appear to be sleeping. Using Sleep of the Dead causes someone to sleep so deeply that their breathing and heart slow down so much to be almost imperceptible. Someone not checking carefully might mistake an enchanted sleeper for a corpse.   Sleep of the Dead's initial theme takes a full minute to play, and will knock a listener out for 12 hours. Each variation played adds another 12 hours, with no diminishing times as with A Time of Rest. The variations don't have to be played sequentially, either. A chanter could wait 11 hours, then come back and play the next variation to extend the sleep.   This chant is challenging, however. Performed incorrectly, the listener might wake up to permanent effects, such as fatigue, a clouded mind, forgetfulness, or a complete inability to sleep again without magical intervention.

Use

Sleep of the Dead is used by physicians during surgery. Even lengthy and invasive surgeries become possible with the patient so deeply asleep.   There have been cases of murders carried out with Sleep of the Dead. There is no chant that can cause instant death, but someone in enchanted sleep might appear to already be dead, and be kept asleep long enough to be buried alive.
