Criminalis Irregulars Military Formation in The Sagas | World Anvil

Criminalis Irregulars

Composition

Manpower

A single formation rounds up to about five hundred men.

Equipment

A sack was given to them, to carry their supplies with them.

Weaponry

Weapons that are given to them are old, worn and in disrepair as they are not even considered to properly defend themselves. With many of them resulting in using clubs and makeshift weapons to fight.

Structure

The only real structure were the soldiers that were assigned to watch the prisoners which number around a fifty and they were well equipped in dealing with the prisoners. Ten of them would watch over a hundred of the prisoners and make them move into battle.

Tactics

They often use numbers to their advantage when it comes to a fight often swarming their enemies and often ganging up on them to ensure that are killed. They are unpredictable and will not fight in the ways of standardized warfare.

Training

Training is none existent with criminals begin trained to move in formation and follow orders. Often through brutality they are brainwashed into obey their captors to do what they are told. Other then they allowed to do what they want in fighting.

Logistics

Upkeep

It cost fifty copper imperial crowns to fund a criminal as they were given poor worn out equipment and little to no supplies as they were expected to die when they were sent out into battle. With those who do survive battle having to resolve to looting to survive.

Recruitment

The prison of the empire were full of those considered expendable by them as they were menaces to society and they might as well be used for something useful in the name of the empire. It did matter who you where or what you did, if you were picked to join you had no choice in the matter. It was either fight in their wars or die right then and there as a result.

History

The creation of the Criminalis Irregulars was considered to be a joke by those in the Vatian Empire when they were first produced. Rather then spending money to produce Legionaries Auxiliaries to increase the military might of the empire, a cheaper solution was created that would be used to removed the criminal elements of the empire and empty out the prisons as well. Criminals across the empire were arrested and conscripted in the military as fodder for the conflicts of the empire. Killing two birds with one stone in the process. The first time these units were created were in the Westhold revolt as a means of not wasting imperial resources on the rebels. Prisons across the empire where cleared out with its worst criminals placed on the front lines to fight. Thousands of them would die in mass droves as they charged at the enemy again and again wearing worn out armor and dull weapons. But it didn't matter to them as had to move or be killed by their jailers. Soon enough the revolt ended and very few imperial were killed in it, but thousands of criminals would die in the process.   Since then, to clearing out prisons for battle fodder was cost effective during war time for the empire as it lowered cost of maintaining prisons and rid the empire of those who would ruin it in the process. Later on it was decided that those who fought in the empire wars would be pardon for their crimes and set free once the fighting was done, though very few would actually being able to gain the pardon. Making it a death sentence to most who were forced to join the irregulars.

Historical loyalties

Prisoners were often forced to obey their jailers or face punishment such as beatings or death, but if they had they chance they would escape and fend for themselves.
