Town of Faug Settlement in The Realm of Beardsgaard | World Anvil

Town of Faug

A waystation town along the eastern route into Nidavellir with residents that are Half Dwarves more often than not, Faug has far more inns than other towns of a size, plenty of shops, smith, wheelwrights and a few decent armorers, all popular with the homesteaders that live in the foothills to the north.

Demographics

Faug's residents are mainly made up of Dwarves and Half Dwarves, with some Gnomes and Humans, but travelers of other species are not uncommon. The town is middle class overall, no one is particularly rich or poor, with the shop and business owners at a slightly higher social stratus than the rest.

Government

The Innkeeper at The Shaggy Bull Inn has been the mayor here for as long as most can remember, and anyone who remembers further back knew his father the Innkeeper/Mayor. Most town business is handled by the Council, made of up the Innkeeper, Smithy, General Store owner, and the rest of the shop owners.

Defences

A sleepy waystation town in Nidavellir does not need many if any defenses, the point is to let people in.

Industry & Trade

From lodging to food, supplies, steeds, and carts, Faug has fresh stock or services for maintenance and repair. In the hills on the outskirts of town roam huge shaggy cattle, raised for meat and selling to travelers for cart pulling.

History

Before anyone lived in this little pocket of Nidavellir, huge furry cows roamed the hills wild. This town began with The Shaggy Bull Inn to serve travelers through the main valley route through Nidavellir around Sarn Hollow, helped by an easy supply of beef. Business was so good they found themselves full every night, and others decided to set up shop here.

Points of interest

The Shaggy Bull Inn is the best known landmark in Faug, but The Oddside Sideshow is a can't miss stop too.

Architecture

The town is solidly built of the oak and pine that grows so abundantly in these mountains.

Geography

Nestled into the edge of the Sarn Hollow mountains amongst the pine and oak trees, Faug sits along edge of a wide, flat, well-travelled valley called The Hollow Road. No above ground rivers flow here, but all of Nidavellir not directly adjacent to running water have access to the deep aquifers beneath the rock.

Climate

Nidavellir's climate is generally cool, colder in the north, warmer in the south and east, and damp along the coast, thanks to the frequent storms crashing into the sea cliffs. In the central regions, spring and fall temperatures hover in the low 60s, summers get into the low 70s, with winters in the 40s, with occasional snowfalls. Underground the temperatures are consistent year round, getting either warmer or colder the deeper you go, depending on where in the kingdom you are.

Faug gets some of the stormy coastal weather, but is shielded from the worst effects by the coastal mountains. It also gets warm air swept up from Midgard, and stays fairly temperate. Spring and fall temperatures average in the high 60s, with summers in the low 70s, and winters usually only getting down to the high 40s or low 50s. Some snow will occasionally sweep through in the winter, but it is rare.
