Student Projects

We believe successful designers and animators are successful problem-solvers and critical thinkers, so you'll explore how to become both. We believe effective design is effective visual communication, so you'll study persuasive message and how to make thoughtful use of the elements of design.   Your projects are framed as real-world assignments and you're encouraged to undertake the role of citizen designer/animator in contemporary practice of design and animation.   Our curriculum provides a solid foundation in traditional and digital craft and tools skills with courses in Drawing for Design, Visual Problem Solving for Design and Digital Craft and Color.
M "Blue" Heimburg received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic & Animation Design (with a concentration in graphic design, a.k.a. "brand, identity, and media design") from Longwood University.   During their degree, they took a wide variety of design, animation, and art classes covering traditional and digital approaches to graphic design. These classes included familiarization with the industry-standard Adobe Creative Cloud softwares, group and individual projects, and, for some students including Blue, experience working with the student design agency Design Lab.   This degree culminated in a year-long individual senior thesis project, in which they chose a specific cause or project and designed the branding and promotional material for that cause. Over the course of this project they refined it with feedback from professors and fellow students, and presented the final project in the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts in May 2021.
