M "Blue" Heimburg

M Heimburg (a.k.a. Blue)

M Heimburg, also known in some circles as Blue, is a designer, artist, writer, roleplayer, and jack-of-all-creative-trades.   Although Blue has been a prolific creator their whole life, they attended Longwood University to hone their craft and get a degree in graphic design. During this time, they were able to put their skills to use working as a designer/art director at Design Lab.   Since graduation, they have been working as a freelance graphic designer while also working on some personal creative projects, including two tabletop roleplaying games. Although they enjoy freelancing, they are now looking to settle into a full-time job where they can both find stability and grow their creative skills (and hopefully meet like-minded creative people along the way!).

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

Blue's nickname comes in part from their trademark bright blue hair (although there is some question as to which came first, the nickname or the hair).

Mental characteristics

Education

Blue has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic & Animation Design (concentration in Graphic Design) from Longwood University. This four-year degree included instruction in traditional and digital media, Adobe creative software, creative problem-solving, and much more, and culminated in a year-long senior thesis project. Blue also attained a minor in Psychology and was a Cormier Honors College honors student, graduating magna cum laude and with honors.

Employment

Blue previously worked for Design Lab, a student-run design agency in Longwood University, for two years. Design Lab is a design agency that takes real-world design jobs from clients across Virginia pro bono as a way to give students true to life experience. Blue began as a Junior Designer and was promoted in their second year to Senior Art Director, the most senior student position, where they were responsible for leading a creative team of other students.   Since graduation, Blue has been working independently as a freelance graphic designer, taking a variety of jobs from logo design to illustration to website management. This flexible work schedule has also given them the opportunity to work on their personal passion projects.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Blue has one primary goal when they create — "I want to make cool things that I am truly proud of" — and there are a few principles that guide them as they work:

  • I design for everyone. I aim to design with accessibility needs in mind, from colorblindness to screen readers to dyslexia.
  • I don't limit myself to one genre. From what I’ve seen, the best creations are boundary-breaking & innovative, so that’s how I work.
  • I want to hear what others say. My design process (and any creative process) always includes looking for feedback from multiple people.
  • & I'm always learning. Classes, workshops, YouTube tutorials, tips from friends — I’m always expanding my skills.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Blue is skilled with multiple design programs including the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, AfterEffects, Premiere, & more).   They also have experience with organizational programs including Notion, Google Docs/Suite, and Slack.

Social

Hobbies & Pets

Blue's closest confidants are their cats: their family's cats Smudge and Nutmeg, and they and their partner's cat Danny Phantom.
