Grand Adventure second logbook

The oldest document in Vitgrud's archive of records is the voyage log of the flagship Grand Adventure that brought the colonists to Ralcondray in 1980 Vol.

Purpose

Most mother ships don't keep detailed travel logs.  However, the Grand Adventure was making only the second crossing of a previously unexplored ocean gap, and the record of currents, winds, and newly observed stars was intended as a guide for charting a safe course for future ships taking the same route.

Historical Details

Background

The Anjendan tideriders intended to establish the first shipping route across the North Gap.  Luraun, who kept the log, had hopes of being named Mother Captain after Connu.  She was fleet captain of the first exploratory voyage as well, and kept a similar log of the route's conditions following the autumnal equinox; that log was handed over to Mraydor's records after the Anjendan family was dissolved.

History

Vitat discovered the log during the salvage efforts after their arrival on Ralcondray. In the unused portion he kept a daily record of weather, a practice continued by skywatchers today. Once the colonsists developed methods of making writing cloth and ink, the weather records were copied over and the log was closed and stored. After that it was read only as part of the education program for each of Vitgrud's future Dancinglights.
In 2056 Vol, the Allied Isles had several copies of the log made. Half were sent to Galtern for researchers to study for clues to the source of the disease that devastated the original fleet, and half to Mraydor to plan possible conduit routes to Ralcondray.
