Vitgrud

Government

Based on badly misremembered systems of Tiderider hierarchy mixed up with Water Seekers, the oldest (or most dominant) water handler is known as the Dancinglight and is essentially a dictator. This ended when Ard filled the role and allowed the colony captains more autonomy.

Defences

Since no other humans knew where Vitgrud even was, the only threat to the village was from natural forces and predators. Homes cluster in the center of each settlement, and are covered by a single large roof that doubles as a public gathering space. Storage spaces form the outermost ring, so that no home is exposed directly to the outside elements, and any assault by graybacks does not directly threaten people.

Industry & Trade

For more than sixty years Vitgrud survived on hunting and gathering. Once reconnected to the cluster, it will become an exporter of raw materials, as it was originally intended to be.

Infrastructure

Every five years another cohort of youth build a new branch as part of their coming-of-age rituals. Ever since the colony's founding, the citizens' efforts have been directed toward building just what is necessary to keep living.  If the colony accepts the Allied Isles' support, the Isles have promised to build facilities to teach engineering and handle the manufacturing required to build a conduit from Ralcondray to the Cluster Islands.

Assets

The survey venture found enough minerals to make backing a mine worthwhile. After the disease worked through the crew, however, these resources were forgotten.

History

Ralcondray began as a speculative mining outpost funded by the Anjendan boat family. En route to the island, an epidemic broke out aboard the flagship that swiftly spread to the rest of the fleet and affected all of the colonists, killing most and causing minor brain damage in the rest. The survivors arrived lacking memory of their original goals, in a "survival mode" mentality that would last the next sixty years.

Tourism

Ralcondray is too far from the cluster to be an attraction to tourists.  Once a reliable conduit exists, that may change.  While the cold seasonal weather is unpleasant, snow is unknown elsewhere in the human-settled islands.

Architecture

Vitgrud is constructed primarily of wood, with stone facing used on outer walls to keep out pests and predators.  Each settlement is organized in a series of concentric rings, with corridors between them and passthroughs separating homes.  Homes are built in pairs to house a joined couple, so that although each has their own residence, they have mutual privacy.

Geography

Ralcondray is covered with temperate forests.  With a further influx of residents and resources, there will likely be further explorations of the surrounding ocean, revealing other islands with different landscapes.

Natural Resources

Residents value a high-growing fruit that requires considerable arborist skills to collect and cultivate.
