Delu

As leader of the Dissolvers, Delu was among the most influential people in recent human history.  The pressure she and her followers applied to the Unity was a major contributor to its collapse.

Personal history

Delu was a tiderider, born and raised on the Castuvol family's mother ship White Wings. She was nine when the ship positioned itself to witness the first conduit boat travel between Mraydor and Galtern. The mother captain underestimated the strength of the waves produced by the boat, and in the collision the White Wings was irreparably damaged, several sailors died, and many others--including Delu--were badly injured. The family was financially ruined by their medical debts and the loss of the mother ship. Much of the fleet had to be sold off, leaving the peripheral family members--again including Delu--tetherless. She spent the next five years in an orphan farm, during which she became increasingly bitter about the impact of the conduits. When she was fifteen, she and a few of her younger cousins hired themselves onto a ferry as spare crew, making their way to Scaetra where they could earn actual money, not just barter goods. By 2009 Vol they had enough to purchase a small mother ship from another struggling tiderider family. She also offered tethering to the family members; few accepted, but news of her offer spread by word of mouth, and soon Delu had a following of like-minded sailors.

Mental Trauma

Delu's injuries occurred because she had climbed the lookout tower for a better view, and was thrown off when the conduit boat's wake struck the ship. She suffered disfiguring damage to her face, broke multiple bones, and lost half her right foot. The incident anchored her mistrust of the conduits as a threat to tideriders.

Morality & Philosophy

Delu has always been a "the ends justify the means" kind of person.  When she can achieve her goal without employing questionable ethics, so much the better; when she can't, she will do what she feels she needs to do with no twinge of conscience.

Motivation

Delu's original goal was to remove the conduits and allow the islands to return to their previous autonomous states, with freesailing tiderider families providing passage for people and goods. Kezlaf's rise to power precipitated a shift in priorities.
She sees it as right and proper that tideriders govern trade and travel across the Ocean. To her, the conduits threaten to destroy a way of life that has ruled for milennia. The perspective of islanders she dismisses as inconsequential. Having grown up on the waves, land is a place to briefly stop to pick up supplies, as infrequently as possible, and the idea of people living there having any influence is quite threatening.
