Mages

Mages are the most famous race for two things: Their powerfull magic, and beeing really eccentric to absolutely crazy. Adding the fact that they live on shattered islands somewhere in the southern seas where none can find them makes this great potential for bed time stories. And there are many of those.

The truth about mages is by far less known. In fact only very few people have ever seen one. All everyone knows is: If you see one, you´ll know it´s a mage.

Civilization and Culture

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

One of the most commonly observed customs among mages is the thruthfulness with each other. This the mages also apply to all other races has led to trouble multiple times in the past as most other races are more often polite then straight truthful.

History

At the beginning of time, the mages lived in the wooded hillands south of the great desert , between the land of the Light elves and first haven bay. But at the beginning of the great demonwar the devil threw all his power against their land, thinking them to pose the greatest danger to his armies. By this the land of the mages was destroyed. But oher than he had intended, he had not managed to sink the land to the bottom of the sea with all its inhabitants. Saved by a miracle the land shattered but stayed afloat and was quickly taken by the current out to the sea.
After suprise and shock had passed, the mages began to work powerfull magic to anchor the islands to the botom of the sea to avoid drifting away from the mainland to far. After having accomplished this they built ships and returned to the mainland to aid the other mortal races in their fight against the demons .
When in the end the mortal races won with the aid of the immortal spirits, the cheer was great. But for the mages this soon ended when at the first council meetings after the war they were accused to have delayed their return to he mainland out of selfishness while the other races had let their lives. At this great anger arose among some of the younger mages and without any waiting they left back for their homeland. But beeing of great wisdom even in their youth most of them had cooled their anger by the time they reached the islands. Only one of them, Kerkitan , was still filled with hot anger andhe withdrew andlaboured long in secret. For by aiding in the anchoring of the islands he had gained acces to the core power of the land and by this he extended the curse that had already been laid on it. Where before no other mortal beeings than mages could find the islands, no no one would ever be able to find it again, even a mage, once they had gone far inland enough on the mainland to loose the smell of the sea. Thus the mages that had stayed behnd on the mainland to argue their case with words and to attemt to keep the peace were stuck on the mainland for the rest of their lives.
After the deeds of the one mage became known he was judged over by his people and was to make undone what he had done. But neither could nor would he and after he died soon after from exhaustion no other could undo the curse.
This when the godking demanded a mage to be present at the meetings of every council, some brave mages took on the task to go into exile and help with all their wisdom to keep the peace on the Land.
But as the years passed other mages grew restless and set sail to the mainland for they were wary of debating and discussing knowledge but never using it. And so they went into exile to. Often they built their homes is sight of the sea and many long refused to go further then where they could still hear the waves. But some were brave enough and travelled the mainland as they used to and gave wisdom and help where they could.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Altough they probably could rule over all the Land by force if they wished to, this has never been in the mind of any mage. They are far to close to nature and far to wise to have such primitive tendencies. Instead they are mostly concerned with helping other races through council, not action. But in this theay have been persistently known to offer their council over the last centuries. Other than dark elves they do not look down on other races that do not have their level of wisdom but wish to guide them so they may reach the same level of wisdom.
