Gnomes are counted among the seven mortal races.
Living on the eastern side of the Main Divide their losses during the great demonwar were smaller then the losses of most other races. During the first Council the godking puts down their involvment during the war to almost nothing as they did not fight in many battles. Therefore they were only admitted a tiny part of there former land - the eastern plains - to live on. Forced to live together there was much conflict between them and their numbers soon dwindled.
Furthermore their tradition of dissecing the dead bodies not only of their own kind but also animals and even other mortal races was banned early on by the godking. This ban howevere was not accepted by the gnomes and were pesecuted and executed for violation of this law.
They have a great dislike for all humans and are often very mean if they come across one.

Civilization and Culture
History
Gnomes belong to the nomad races. During the first Order they were known to travel mainly their homeland, the eastern plains, but also elswhere on the Land they could often be found living in tent camps, wagons or as travellers.
They were very gifted with skills of healing and therefore often sought and well paid by both commoner and king. Altough offered great amounts of wealth, land and other goods they ever refused sharing their knowledge with any other race which caused greed to arise at times and in places. Yet whenever their were needed greatly the greed would make space for respect and very few gnomes ever refused the plea of the suffering.
During the great demonwar they mostly cared for the ill and wounded and joined the actual fight only on rare occasions.
