Kotimaa
The Kotimaa is a group of islands in the Northeastern Region, encompassing the southwestern portion of the Norður Islands. By some definitions, it has more islands than any other archipelago in the Great Ring, although most of these islands are very small and close together. Many of the islands are connected by bridges and causeways that cross waterways as narrow as thirty feet. These bridges and causeways allow for the existence of the Kotimaa Road, which forms a ring that connects all the largest and most populated islands in the group.
The largest settlement in the Kotimaa is the city of Aabo, located on the island of Saari. It is considered the starting point of the Kotimaa Road, and it is the busiest port in the Kotimaa.
Geography
The Kotimaa island group has a very large number of islands, and depending on what landmasses are counted it may have the largest number of any archipelago in the Great Ring. The collective area of the islands is 2,433 square miles, nearly half of which is the largest island, Saari. The other large islands are Hiidenmaa and Ahvenan, which jointly take up another quarter of the total area, leaving the remaining 700 square miles of land divided among nearly 50,000 other smaller islets, most of which are uninhabitable rocks and skerries. A little under 300 of the islands have a permanent population, and many of those are so close together and interconnected that they operate more like larger islands than collections of small ones. The sea in the area is quite shallow with an average depth of 75 feet, and large ships are not usually able to navigate the channels between the islands.
