Schinter

Geography

The landscapes of Schinter can be broken up into several smaller regions:
  • The blasted heaths of the Greystone Valley;
  • The forbidding reaches of the White Guard Mountains to the east, the jagged peaks of the Orchills to the south, and the fiery crags of the Red Guard Mountains to the west;
  • The fertile soils of the Schinter Valley;
  • Lake Lós, from which many people make a living as fishermen and which is fed by multiple rivers and streams;
  • The scrublands that form the Western Valley; and
  • The forested depths of the Zaltar Vale.
  • Fauna & Flora

    Greystone Valley is nearly devoid of plant life, and what plant life there is is commonly heather or short grasses. The animals that live here include hawks, eagles, and other birds of prey, which feed on the voles and other burrowing animals whose homes dot the heath.   The mountains are dark and craggy, and the creatures who live here are adapted to survive in the harsh snowy climate. What little grass that exists in the plateaus and mountain valleys are fed upon by wild boar and goats, who are in turn eaten by the trolls and dwarves that live in the various moss-filled caves in the hills. Tales also come down from the mountains of statue-like men animated by moss that drain the heat from various animals, leaving them bloodless and stiff.   The main Schinter Valley takes up much of the southern half of the region, and it is here that the most people of the region call home. The swaying grass plains of the valley are a home to many grazing animals that are hunted by the human population. Various songbirds also make their nests in the ground in this region.   Lake Lós is home to a wealth of fish species that even puts the tropical fishes of Anotaash and Hayim to shame. Various species of trout and salmon live in the depths of the lake, along with many freshwater sharks hunted for the local delicacy. River mosses and flotsam from river settlements has been known to be eaten by drakelings, little draconic humanoids who feed on waste and are intelligent enough to make deals with local humans.   The scrublands of the Western Valley are nearly lifeless, with only the barest shrubs and sickly-looking trees providing any kind of plant life. Vultures and similar scavenging birds of prey live in the air, while burrowing bugs (some gigantic in size) crawl and burrow in the dirt for fungi to eat.   The Zaltar Vale is full of fungi, large redwoods, and freshwater streams, making this an ideal home for owls, bears, and owlbears. What few people who live here learn to live off of the local mushrooms and berries and the occasional fish.

    Natural Resources

    The region is most well known for its mining, and the deepest and most prolific mines in the world are located here. These mines produce iron, gold, and precious minerals, as well as the coveted variety of granite that is one of the toughest substances known on Endaman.   The southern plains form one of the most famous wining regions in the world, second only to maybe the Lintin Valley to the south. Most of the wine is shipped out east to the capital or west for export to Hayim, meaning that the locals do not often get to taste the literal fruits of their labour.   Lake Lós may not be the largest body of water in the Empire, but it is the calmest in comparison to the storminess of The Bright Sea, so the fish from this lake is highly prized in most inland regions of the Empire and beyond.
