Manor Heist
This event triggers once the party visits Lumairen again, after completing the quest Pesky Bandits.
When staying in Lumairen, the party may overhear a discussion between the tavern owner, Theo Brine, and the mayor, Lupis Arbor. This conversation takes place at the town hall. The two are arguing about a plan of Theo. The barman is trying to convince Lupis to hire a band of adventurers to sneak into Silver Lake Mansion and kill Mavis Oldoro. He argues that doing this would mean that the Golden Arcana Mercs who are protecting the manor will just leave and that it would allow for one of the townspeople that work as at the manor to take back the emerald pearl (Cloud Orb). Lupis does not want to hear it, believing the plan to be too risky and would just leave blood on their hands. After this, Theo storms out. The players may enquire further about the conversation with either of the man. Doing so will reveal that some fishermen have gone missing recently. While most believe it is connected to demon activity, there are some in the town that believes Silverlake Mansion to be behind this, Theo being one of them. As such, the barman is convinced that Mavis Oldoro should be killed, seeing it as the only way to finally get the troublesome merchant off their back.
If the players do not overhear this conversation, they can still get involved with the heist by staying at the local tavern. When spending time there, at some point they will be approached by Anabelle Lakeson who will ask them if they are interested in a job. She will mention it is a heist of some sort and ask them to follow her to a backroom where she will tell them the details if the party wants to help out. Moving to a different room, Theo Brine will be there as well. The tavern keeper will explain they intend to see Mavis dead, promising to pay well for the players to take out the merchant. Anabelle follows up on this, noting that they can arrange a secret way for the party to sneak into the manor. Because Anabelle’s sister works at the manor, she can show the party a secret passageway that leads to the manor’s cellar. The two will also request the party to take out the head butler, Otto Greyborn, just to be safe. If the players are in, Theo will show them a map of the manor, pointing out a number of details including where they can likely find Mavis Aldoro and Otto Greyborn.
In case the players express concern that this could backfire on the town, Theo will console them. Having had a few of the mercenaries that guard the manor over at his tavern, he has a strong impression that they would not attack the town. His reasoning behind this is that, if they were to attack Lumairen, it would be equivalent to these mercenaries admitting that a small town in some backwater province would be able to outwit them. This would be a stain on their reputation, so it would make more sense that they’d just try and cover it up.
Whenever the party is ready, they can meet up with Lolo Lakeson, Anabelle's sister, at a small overhang near the lake’s shore. Lolo will answer any final questions the players may have. She will also note that there is a guest at the manor who to her knowledge is an old friend of Mavis who is a scholar wanting to use the telescope that her master has set up on the top floor, probably to either study the tower or the cloud deck hanging over the province. This man is called …, who is secretly a member of the order of the twelve, just like Mavis. Afterward, she will lead the players to a hidden door that opens up to a small passage that ends in the manor’s cellar.
Once at the manor, the players can spot Mavis and … near the stairs of the cellar. They will overhear a short conversation between the two about some subject that … has his eyes on. … asks Mavis about his impression of the subject, to which Mavis corrects the scholar that he himself has not met them. He clarifies that the party to which the subject belongs has previously done some job for him that was handled by his butler before Mavis arrived at the manor. Otto Greyborn did not have a too positive opinion of the man, calling him boorish. During this conversation, Mavis finicks with one of the statues near the stairs which opens up a hidden passageway. The two of them pass through and the entrance closes behind them. Investigating the statue will inform the players that there is a small hole on the bottom side of the left statue’s chin. The hole is circular and has a particular shape like you can place a small crest in it. To trigger the statue, the players can find a ring in Mavis’ office which has a matching crest, this will open the door to a hidden stairway leading the Silver Lake Laboritory.
