The Kraken's Reach - Krakonia's Military

Created after The Unification Wars in the early days following the official founding of The Kingdom of Krakonia , the Kraken's Reach is the military force dedicated to the protection and advancement of Krakonia's safety and prosperity. Created by Supreme Commander Robert Whitrock , and inspired by a military ranking system from Earth , his plane of origin, the Kraken's Reach is designed to encompass as many possible fields of danger as possible without overstepping the bounds of individual and collective freedoms.

The Kraken's Reach is divided into four distinct branches: the army branch, the navy branch, the enforcement branch, and the special forces branch. These branches are the primary reason for why the Kraken's Reach got its name in the first place, as the kraken itself has many arms, so too does the influence of Krakonia's military. Each of these four branches mostly operate independently of each other, but are overseen by the Supreme Commander of the Kraken's Reach, a title that is shared between two people. The first of these individuals is the king of the kingdom itself, a position currently held by King Daerius Quintus of Krakonia . The king has many other problems to handle, however, so the ultimate authority of the military is also given to a single trusted ally, the second Supreme Commander. This man, sometimes also known as the "dedicated" Supreme Commander, is currently Robert Whitrock himself. It is generally understood that the dedicated supreme commander still answers to the king, but his connection as the king's most trusted military commander means that, in matters involving the military, his word is the king's word unless otherwise disputed by the king himself.

The Kraken's Reach HQ is a location in Krakonia City's capital known as The Brain of the Kraken . The Brain is the meeting place for every branch of the military, and where most of the highest ranking members of the Kraken's Reach are stationed. Beyond that, there are multiple other buildings and/or areas more specific to each branch. The Head of the Kraken is located near the Brain, and is the main HQ for the Special Forces branch. The Eyes of the Kraken are the lighthouses along Krakonia's coast, each surrounded by a navy base. The Arms of the Kraken are the official buildings of the Army branch, and are essentially land military bases and/or forts. The Radula and Teeth of the Kraken are the locations pertinent to the enforcement branch, the radulae being the police stations throughout the region, and the teeth being the prisons. Lastly, there's The Heart of the Kraken , also known as Krakonia Castle, where the king rules over the rest of the Kraken's Reach.

Each branch of the Kraken's Reach has a ranking structure that has different titles depending on the branch, but ultimately share power between ranks of the same level. For example, a private in the army branch would have the same authority as an officer in the enforcement branch. When there is a discrepancy between equally ranked positions, the ultimate authority is generally granted to the position more closely coinciding with the matter at hand (A private has authority over an officer in matters of war, whereas an officer has authority over a private in matters of law).

THE ARMY BRANCH

The Army Branch of the Kraken's Reach is dedicated to matters of war on land, including, but not limited to, border control, great beast culling, bandit eradication, and possible land-based battles against other nations (although currently the kingdom is at peace with foreign powers, so this responsibility is moot). The ranking system is as follows:

THE NAVY BRANCH

The navy branch of the Kraken's Reach is dedicated to matters of war on the sea, including, but not limited to, border control, great beast culling, pirate eradication, and possible naval battles against other nations (although currently the kingdom is at peace with foreign powers, so this responsibility is moot). The ranking system is as follows:

THE ENFORCEMENT BRANCH

The enforcement branch of the Kraken's Reach is dedicated to matters of domestic law enforcement, which primarily means they are responsible for maintaining the peace within the kingdom through the acts of arresting suspected criminals, watching over and maintaining prisons, and patrolling Krakonian territory for signs of danger. The ranking system is as follows:

THE SPECIAL FORCES BRANCH

The special forces branch encompasses any of the responsibilities not covered by the other three branches of the Kraken's Reach, which often results in reconnaisance and exploration as their main official responsibility, although pretty much anyone in the military can tell you that the true interests of the special forces branch lies in espionage. They are also called upon when the other three branches need reinforcements for any particular reason, granting any such individual temporary ranking in the relevant branch equal to their special forces ranking until the job is completed. The ranking system is as follows:

ADVENTURERS AND OTHER GUILD AFFILIATIONS

While not official members of the Kraken's Reach, adventurers are often called upon as reinforcements for military behests. Sometimes jobs are too small or too obscure for the main military force to bother dealing with, sometimes reinforcements are simply requested when special forces are unavailable, and sometimes specific behests require a specific set of skills not generally held within ranked soldiers of the Kraken's Reach. Often times, in the latter scenario, the various guilds of Krakonia are informed of these specific behests, at which point it is common for the guilds to outsource these behests to adventurers associated with the The Adventurers Guild of Krakonia(AGK) . When an adventurer takes on a behest associated with the Kraken's Reach, they are usually given a temporary rank based on the judgement of the behest-giver, who will always be associated with the appropriate branch of the Kraken's Reach and have enough authority to make such a call. In all such cases, the rank of the adventurer will share a name with the rank they are adopting, although always with the word temporary in front of it. For example, if the enforcement branch of a small village requests assistance from an adventurer to investigate a crime, that adventurer will be granted the authority to investigate the crime with the same authority as an officer. In this scenario, while the job is ongoing, they will be considered a Temporary Officer.
