Trondalen Palace

King Ragnald did not decide on building a permanent residence for the royals until the island had been completely mapped. He decided to build it in Trondalen, as it was the most central island, and nearly all others islands were accessible through the waterways surrounding it. Construction began in 525 with the coronation hall and royal quarters. later additions under following Eyland kings include: the Housecarls' hall, the nobles' apartments, the throne room, the gatehouses, etc. Construction finally halted in 653, and no more has been added since. The kingdom's capital, Konigstad, was founded about a mile away from it, by order of king Ragnald. It has since grown into one of the largest cities in the Eylands. In 862 the coronation hall was burned down by mercenaries. It has since been rebuilt to its former glory by the Prince of Trondalen. Though Fort Gartyr is the tallest castle in all the Eylands, Trondalen Palace is by far the largest by footprint.

Purpose / Function

Seat of the king and the high council of nobles, ceremonial hall for coronations, meeting place for royal housecarls and reception of other important guests.

Alterations

The palace was expanded over 128 years (525-653), and has since remainded unaltered as it already houses many functions. The coronation hall was burned down and then rebuilt to its exact former state.

Architecture

The palace is the perfect example of typically Eylandian architecture. It's a monumental structure, covered in stone decorations and filled with stained glass windows. Like most buildings it is ment to impress and show the wealth of its inhabitants. Even ordinary people attempt to make their house as decorative as possible on the outside just to mimic the show-off behaviour of the kings and nobles.

Defenses

The palace was built on a small island created by a split in the Elva River. This serves as its main natural defenses. Aside from that the entire island is surrounded by a stone wall with battlements. Several trebuchets can be used to defend the castle from the inside.

History

Served as home to twenty-one kings, gradually expanded over the first century of its existence, later also home to the council of high nobles that elected the kings between 764 and 862. Partially burned down, and restored over the last thirty years.
