House Varangoth

A bastard branch of the House of Eyland. They hold the title 'Ealdorman of Varangoth'. Usually bastards of the king were made earls, but this was a special case as the mother of the first Varangoth was a daughter of the Prince of Lowenthal. They were then made ealdormen instead in 572 by King Halvor. In the Autumn of 890, the Prince of Lowenthal joined forces with Lord Astor to reinstall the hereditary system under the House of Varangoth. This was inspired by the Alliance of the Dragon, and was subsequently called the Alliance of the Lion. It did however also resemble the Trondalen plan, as secretly the Prince of Lowenthal knew that when successful he would be granted the chancellorship of the royal government. The rivalry between Lowenthal and Trondalen had existed for centuries. After several battles were won by the Prince of Lowenthal, the road to the palace was open. The House of Varangoth subsequently gained kingship of the Eylands. When the Trondalens were defeated, King Astor named the Prince of Lowenthal "Chancellor of the King's government". King Astor first installed a system of Archgovernors, seeking to gain sympathy in the other princely houses of the Eylands, as no king of the Eylands can be crowned without presence of all sovereign princes and fylkirs of the Eylands and an 80% majority of the nobility, hence the enormous size of the Coronation Hall. He already had great support from the North and West. not long afterwards all Eylands were in favour of the Varangoth crown, and gave king Astor their blessing during the coronation ceremony. Prince Hakon, the king's younger brother, and princess Eldrid have already been married off respectively to the houses of Soraland and Norland
