Smith's Bar Building / Landmark in The End of the World | World Anvil

Smith's Bar

Smith's Bar serves the End of the World. The origin of this name is rather lost to history. One school of thought is that it is named after the top of the bar, which was forged from nickel-iron gathered from the still-molten core of a world blasted when its sun went nova. Another group claims that this is where the first world forgers gathered after their shifts at the anvils. And, of course, there is a small group who say that it's named Smith's because it's where you go to get hammered.

Design

The length of the bar is somewhat hard to determine, as the abundant traffic makes pacing it off rather challenging. Since those who decide to attempt it have usually been imbibing, the results are inconsistent at best. Those who are particularly persistent usually find themselves running into someone larger, bettered armored, or just outright meaner, which invariably results in the termination of the survey, if not the actual surveyor.   The actual counter top is a single bar of forged metal, four inches thick and two feet wide. It had to have been put in place before the building could be built around it, as the very idea of moving such a thing boggles the mind. The top rests on a base of the same granite that makes up the rest of the building. It should be noted that the bar top does not share the liquid absorbing properties of the floor. Spills must be wiped up.

Entries

There is the main door, which is tall and wide enough for almost anyone to enter. Near the entrance there is a staircase down to Smith's Lounge.   Within the building here are doors to the kitchen, to the storage cellars, and to the scullery.

Sensory & Appearance

Smith's Bar can get a little louder and rowdier than The Main Hall. Most conversations are defused before they get out of hand, but the bartenders can summon Forge Guardians if necessary. Since many of them spend their off hours in the Inn, one is likely to be on the scene very quickly.

Denizens

At any given time there many be a dozen or more bartenders of various species working. Abundant prehensile limbs is a common characteristic, as the ability to draw and serve four or more mugs at once helps to keep things moving. A few beverages are the specialty of individual bartenders, as they alone possess the appropriate resistance to the ingredients.   While there are many bartenders, the barkeeper is Mort. He can usually be seen wandering amidst the staff, checking that supplies are adequate, the glassware is clean, and that the customers are both satisfied and satisfactory.

Contents & Furnishings

A staggering array of bottles lines the wall behind the bar, matched only by the bewildering ranks of dispensing taps. The glassware tends to be sturdy, so as to withstand frequent clashes as toasts are raised.   There are a number of stools that share the same characteristics as the chairs in the Worlds' End Inn. They are always exactly the right size, regardless of who sits on them and they may only be slid, never lifted.

Architecture

The walls of the building are built of the granite commonly used for construction at The End of the World. These blocks are smaller and less precisely fitted than those of some of the more monumental buildings, such as the Worlds' End Inn. The roof consists of thatch over a wooden frame.   Inside the building, the rafters and slats for the roof are exposed. The beams that support the roof are massive and meet in intricate joints that use no metal, relying purely upon the artistry of the craftsmen to bind them together.   The floor consists of wooden planks, each wider that the arm span of a human and running the full length of the building.   The interior walls of Smith's Bar are paneled, with ornate trim. The wood used within the bar is all said to have come from one of the Integral Trees orbiting the neutron star Voy. As such, it has remarkable strength and resistance to damage.   Unlike the Main Hall in the Worlds' End Inn, Smith's Bar does not have a hearth, but rather a large central fire pit, above which is a huge copper chimney to gather the smoke. This arrangement allows more people to sit around the fire and have separate conversations.   A broad staircase leads down to Smith's Lounge.
