March-Kingdom of Kchatéldelest

The March-Kingdom of Kchatéldelest is an oddity among the Orentesh states, and actually traces its lineage back to East Oleandron. During the collapse of East Oleandron, a large number of its soldiers were caught on the Plaires Centralis, where they could no longer be reinforced or return to their homes. Some of these soldiers, under Captain Pomponius Antonus, fled north towards the March l'Orent, a string of highland fortifications guarding the borders of what was then Oleandron-controlled Plaires Centralis. Antonus' troops reinforced the local garrison, who had been trapped in their forts, defeating the nomads who had broken free of their control and taken over the countryside. After consolidating the surrounding region, the soldiers and local Orentesh began to see a cultural merging, eventually forming a unique cultural blend. Taking over the reigns as the new Margrave, the Antonus dynasty would last until the region was conquered and sacked by the Khanate of Clesentia in 1195. Most of its citizens were brought back as slaves to farm the Tisczö river, so the region was almost completely depopulated until after the Khanate was defeated, 30 years later.
Unlike many of the other groups conquered by Clesentia, the populace of the region returned to their homeland with some outsiders and did not immedietey fall into chaos, as they were protected from the racial violence on the plains themselves. Therefore, they never join the migration of peoples who left the region under command of High Jarl Øldar, the Fierce, to colonize Frostreach. Instead, they unfied under a new name: Kchatéldelest. From then on, it would be known as the March-Kingdom and its citizens as Kchatlyn. Kchatéldelest benefited greatly from the boom in trans-Plaires trade and economically dominated the Rosklet goblins who emerged from bondage much as they had. These Rosklet, who had formed the city of Fregobba, were defeated by centaurs and soon came under the control of Kchatéldelest, which ruthlessly exploited them as they needed workers and had a small population. This naturally angered the Rosklet, who revolted in 1437. After this, Kchatéldelest placed all goblins under slavery and forced them to work in the center of their country. Despite this, the goblins remained rowdy, so Kchatéldelest's leadership then formed the plains manors; a thin stretch of poor lands which goblin slaves toiled on. These Plains Manors were generally held by the head of the Bolyans, which are the Kchatlyn nobility.
Their trade with nations across the Plaires Centralis in exchanging slaves and other goods for amber and metals brought great wealth to the Kchatéldelest, especially compared to the other Orentesh. While the trade was fickle at best as it depended on the cooperation of centaurs, it nonetheless brought great wealth to Kchatéldelest. Kchatéldelest's rising power led to many Doikorán Bolyans paying tribute in exchange for protection and military support against their rivals, many of whom had sworn fealty to the Agrenraysereg Federation. While this agreement tended to be on a personal level, it is possible that in the long term it may have translated into less loose and more reliable forms of tribute, laying the foundations for further conquest of the region. However, Kchatéldelest fell into civil war in 1607, which lasted until 1618 and did serious damage to their hegemony over the Orentesh. The Doikorán Bolyans would immediately stop paying tribute and began raiding the borders. The losing side of the civil war was also backed by the owners of the plains manors; their manors were looted and destroyed. This led to many of their goblin slaves being dispersed across northern Telgren during this time, mostly to till fields which would otherwise lay fallow due to fighting.
Kchatéldelest never had a large population base, and the loss of fealty from may of their subjects seriously harmed their image as a stable and prosperous power, which prevented them from reestablishing their rule. They simply did not have the manpower to punish those who betrayed them without suffering serious economic harm, which the March-Kings were unwilling to do. Ever since then, the Kchatlyn have largely built up their nation instead of fighting with other Bolyans. Their cautious attitude allowed the slow unification of many other Orentesh tribes, coalescing into a number of tribal federations, though none are quite as united as Kchatéldelest. For many years the Agrenraysereg Federation was the dominant power to their east, before the Doikorán Bolyans united and formed Doikorás, displacing Agrenraysereg. Doikorás has come to dominate most of the other Orentesh in recent years, which forces Kchatéldelest to divide their attention between them and the centaurs, who are always a threat. Good thing they have those Rosklet buffers!
