Goblins

"Listen here! You humans, you think that the lot of a goblin is to be slave. Well that notion is hammered into your heads from birth for one reason and one reason only- the oppression of my people! Someday soon, you will all pay." - A Goblin rebel, moments before being executed (they did not, in fact, pay)

Gobins are perhaps the most unlucky race in all of the realm. With a small stature, no notable abilities, and lacking an affinity for magic, the only thing the goblins have going for them is their large birth rates. For many years goblins have been easily captured due to their tribal government and used as slaves of (almost) every kind. In recent years, however, with societies becoming more organized around the world, some goblins have managed to form structured states are are truly coming into their own. Former slave goblins have additionally formed communities within other sovereign states and established themselves as workers, though these goblins are usually seen as second or third class citizens.
Some would say that it's the goblins' own fault that they have largely fallen behind other races. While it is certainly true that most goblins are lazy, greedy, lying, and spineless, the question faced is whether their behavior is learned or natural. Both sides of this debate have been used to justify goblin slavery; the nature side claiming that goblins need harsh oversight or else they will never amount to anything and the nurture side claiming that slavery will bring civilization to the goblins an make them upstanding citizens. As for goblins? They have no issue with enslaving and even selling other goblins, and some of the most powerful goblin clans are those that do just that, using the money gained to fund expansion. Goblins mostly live in the jungles of Archelin and Ifyrial, and their populations on other continents are mainly descended from migrants or former slaves. However, thanks to their ability to seemingly always eke out a living, even in the harshest of conditions, their populations have grown.
Goblins are a short, usually thin, race. They have slightly longer arms than one would expect for their height, which is especially notable in their thin dextrous fingers. Their fingers and toes have small, claw-like protrusion, similar to demi-claws, rather than being true claws. These behave similarly towards fingernails but always grow to a point and are tougher to break. Like fingernails, they do grow back. Goblins have rather large heads for their size, similar to other intelligent races. However, they do have less developed sectors relating to things such as pain or fear. Though they feel pain and fear, they can easily ignore it and keep fighting. This is considered disadvantageous on an individual level because it means goblins have a difficult time realizing when they need to seek medical help, but poses and advantage for the swarm tactics, since they can keep fighting when another race would have been writhing in pain. It does make childbirth somewhat easier, however, which helps considering their absurd birthrates. Goblins have large ears, noses, and eyes, making their senses well-developed and allowing them to effectively execute ambush tactics. They have developed canines, which allows their bite to be more effective than most races. Most goblins can only grow limited facial hair, mostly limited to males. When compared to humanoids and goblinoids, they have fairly typical hair on their heads, though they usually have straighter hair rather than curly. Goblin hair typically doesn't grow as long as other races, but is just as thick.
There are five different types of goblins, not including the hobgoblins, who, though distant relations to the goblins are not actually any more closely related to their smaller cousins than a human is to an elf. Of these five subgroups, by far the most populous and widespread are the long eared, or common, goblins. Living in a wide band of settlement from central Ærellion through the islands of Archelin and into Ifyrial, they have a staggering array of wildly divergent customs and languages. As the most common group, their features have become the stereotype for all goblins, namely green skin, alongside large ears, noses, and eyes. These goblins are known to have limited hair growth, including little to no dense facial or body hair, with hair growth being limited to the head, and that typically being naturally short, even in women. Their primary terrain is the jungle, where their small size and agility make them hard to outcompete, allowing them to maintain their own communities without interference from outsiders. They have also been known to thrive in urban areas, when brought there by slavers. Alongside the populous common goblins, the islands of Archelin also host burrowing goblins. Dwelling apart from their jungle-loving brethren, the burrowing goblins primarily inhabit the deserts and drylands of the islands. During the day, they typically remain underground to escape the heat, before emerging at dusk to trap and consume the various noctunral fauna of the deserts. Often, populations will form around underground aquifers which provide much-needed water. Typically nocturnal, they have even larger and more sensitive eyes and ears than the common goblins. Their skin is typically a sandy or brown color, with some displaying more greyish tones. The burrowing goblins are usually found to the south of the common goblins, and to their north (on Ærellion) dwell the tusked goblins. With gray or sandy-toned skin, they are adapted to both the Temperior Mountains as well as the adjacent desert. Their defining feature is their small tusks, which seem to serve little actual purpose beyond combat but are considered a status symbol and seen as desireable in a mate. Because of their similarities to orcs, they are the most likely to interact with orcs, and therefore most bugbears are born to one tusked goblin parent. Much further north than the tusked goblins, living in latitudes to the north of the Ærellic steppe, the tufted goblins may be found. Tufted goblins are known to have a light grey or white coloring as well as smaller ears, giving them a distinct look compared to their southern relations. The tufted goblins get their name from being the only race of goblin to grow full facial hair, as well as having significantly more hair than regular goblins. Alongside their smaller ears, this has made them more adapted to cold temperatures than the other subraces. The final subgroup of goblins, the wild eastern goblins are a rare sight and only encountered on the continent of Mortvügg. Their low population and savage demeanor typically nets them few friends, and their population is limited to a few small pockets. Short and squat compared to the other goblins, they generally have skin which is a coppery tone, which may be more of a muted tone or even having a tarnished or greenish skin tone, though not as green as the common goblins.
