East Oleandron
East Oleandron was a short-lived dictatorial state which dissolved into interracial violence, much like its counterpart in West Oleandron. However, in East Oleandron, the violence was far worse and resulted in multiple cases of ethnic cleansing. Despite being the more violent half of the Empire during this period, East Oleandron lasted longer than the west, as there was a much larger human population there.
Structure
East Oleandron was a military dictatorship, with the leadership being exclusively high-ranking officers. Their leader, and Marshal of the nation, was the nominal head, though this position was tenuous.
History
Following the establishment of East and West Oleandron, the leadership pursued a number of policies that they hoped would stop the internal strife. They also reopened the Imperial Magical Academy, which had been closed since the '67 coup, this time making it open to all races. This academy was to be one part of an exchange program between East and West Oleandron; the East would run the magical academy and the west would run the military one, but both halves could use them freely. This deal would have perhaps encouraged cooperation and prevented the halves from drifting apart, but there were immediate issues. The elven revolt in the west prevented them from sending their most talented mages to the academy, and therefore it operated with mostly eastern students for most of its time open.
East Oleandron was soon too busy with its own issues to worry about the magical academy anyways, since unrest continued to rise. In 781, a protest by centaurs against manadatory military service turned violent, and a rebellion soon emerged. East Oleandron would then be forced to fight, essentially, a second instance of Broadhoof's Mutiny, but this time with less military strength. Though their forces penetrated into the Plaires Centralis, they were unable to make headway in subjugation, and had to be called back after just two years. The reason for this is the Elven coup attempt in 783. Though the coup failed, the elven rebels established a base upstream, and the situation fell even further into chaos. The Imperial Magical Academy was taken over by the most radical rebels and its students never seen again, the nation was cut off from its northern regions where much of the army was, and violence had erupted in most cities. Fury at the attempts of the elves to restore the unequal governance of before boiled over and soon the streets of the cities ran red with blood as elves and eldritch alike were slaughtered in droves (since the eldritch were also hated for their role as middlemen). When refugees from this violence fled north, the elves were given priority, and most eldritch starved or died of illness. Their numbers would never recover.
With their northern armies effectively caught between elven rebels and centaur rebels, East Oleandron established the Northern Command in 784, whose essential goal was to stay alive and hold the lands still loyal in the north until forces from the south arrived to relieve them. This was intended to be a temporary measure, but as the months dragged on the situation became unsustainable. As the south made no progress whatsoever, it became clear that sitting and waiting was not going to work, and the various generals tore the command apart; the region fell into chaos by 787. Groups fled in each direction or stayed put, hoping against hope and loyal to the last. In the end, most of them ended up integrating into local tribes but a few groups had notable exploits. One group pushed east and helped in the formation of Kchatéldelest. Others caused such strife in the Verderé Hills that the halflings there declared independence in 789.
In the south, East Oleandron was able to hold the front but do little else. The loss of most of their best troops in the north had effectively hamstrung their armies, and with their mages dissappeared by the elves, they were seriously outclassed in magic. The only thing keeping the nation together at this point was the fact that the army was very large, and that nobody wanted the elves back. Cities especially feared vengeance for their massacres, contributing to the fear in the nation. Finally, in 797, the newest generation of officers overthrew the old guard for being too "pro elvish" (allowing elves to live in the nation at all). They objected to the nation being named after an elf, and so renamed both it and the capital to Casyrian, marking the end of East Oleandron.
