Unknown Space

Into the Void

The Delta Space is a well-travelled slice of space, having been thoroughly chartered over countless generations by explorers, merchants, and good ole space cowboys. While this chartered space still has many unexplored nooks and crannies the construction of Probability Suspension Drives and the equally ridiculous Improbably Distance Drives, have allowed quick and relatively safe travel within this triangle-shaped slice of the known universe.    Outside of this known space, however, is a vast stretch of seemingly endless void simply known as Unknown Space. Unknown Space is comprised of countless light-years of an empty cold void, no stars, no planets, practically nothing can be seen in this strange void. The only lights that can be seen are the lights of the stars that are light-years away themselves back in the direction of The Delta Space. Only an empty black void can be seen when travelling deeper into Unknown Space, which seems to indicate that nothing lies beyond but more emptiness. And while this may seem to imply that it should be safe to wander through, it is anything but.

Dangers of The Unknown

Unknown Space holds much more danger than most would assume, despite its vast expanses of nothing but void it still holds extreme danger. While Abnormal events occur fairly often within the confines of The Delta Space, they are often mundane or cause little lasting damage. Though there have been a few exceptions to that during the long history of Delta Space. A typical Abnormality Event within the confines of The Delta Space could range from a sudden electrical storm, the sudden relocation of a ship a short distance (on a galactic level - this could still mean a difference of moving several light-years in a single moment, often with literal bone-jarring effects), and the creation of various items seemingly out of thin air known Abnormality Objects.    Abnormality Events out in Unknown Space, however, happen much more frequently and are often sudden, violent, and extreme. Common in Unknown Space is the arrival of powerful energy storms, that appear as if from nowhere, enveloping anything within it and bombard it violently until it is completely shaken apart or burnt to crisp, leaving nothing alive inside, or worse yet, leaving those inside unable to reach help. Leaving them to perish in the cold expanse of the void.   Other examples of sudden events that occur often out in Unknown Space is the appearance of an asteroid field materializing around ships, entire ships suddenly freezing solid despite their systems being fully working, the air supply systems of ships suddenly venting themselves, antigravity fields turning off, ships suddenly catching fire in odd fluorescent flames despite being in a void, and the occasional ship or two sudden evaporating into nothing as if made of steam. Some of the more colourful events to have happened in the unknown are ships being completed encased in large vines, despite being in the vacuum of space, and a ship's entire crew having been completely transmogrified into a species of stripped waterfowl.   Most of these cases are only known from fragments of audio and video logs recovered from stray bits of ship that have floated back into known space, as most that enter Unknown Space for any extended periods of time have not returned. Only a small handful of space cowboys and explorers have entered the unknown on more than one occasion and returned. Most that survive one trip have had their fill and decide never to return.

Unconfirmed Legends

It is rumoured that a vast energy storm encircles the entirety of Delta Space, with the area that is known as Unknown Space being a buffer of billions of vast light-years of the cold void between civilization and this supposed storm. The popular myth states that the storm is violent and energetic after-effects of a nearby galaxy suddenly imploding upon itself for unknown reasons before suddenly violently expanding and shooting out into an immense and unending energy storm that defies logic.    Many people believe that this energy is the same one that fuels the Abnormality Occurences in Delta Space, including the creation of Abnormality Objects. And the reason why Unknown Space is so unpredictable is that the closer you get to the storm, the more unpredictable reality becomes due to the logic-defying energy storm. No actual evidence has ever been recorded that supports this theory though.

Very interesting region. Those sound like some very strange events happening there. That myth about the energy storm around delta space makes it even more mysterious. Would one be able to see this storm? Or does the galaxy look just like a normal galaxy would look like while being in it?

Feel free to check my new world Terra Occidentalis if you want to see what I am up to!

I think there have been potential glimpses of said storm from afar, maybe even some odd readings during scans etc. But only enough so that people have begun to spin rumours and legends about it. Nobody has truly seen it up close so to speak and for the vast majority of people, regular space just looks normal. Though all sorts of bizarre things do occur in this region usually out of nowhere. Kind of like how the Abnormality Objects appear out of nowhere, In this region extreme events seem to appear out of nowhere. Or at least that is sort of how I have envisioned it.

I love how you've taken a seemingly endless, empty void, and turned it into something terrifying. The random things that happen out there are so interesting, too!   Aside from thrill seeking or hoping to find interesting things out there, why do people want to travel into the Unknown Space? Is there a considerable amount of people that go out there to try and harvest scrap and stuff from those who have failed to make it back?

I think it is a variety of things that pull people to this space. While not nearly as well travelled or populated as the more well-charted sectors I think Unknown Space, despite its danger, is a place of interest to people for a variety of reasons.   Adventurers are pulled there because of the allure of the unknown and the mystery of what causes such extreme events. Scrappers and the like are pulled there because there is a fair amount of resources floating about and there are no rules or governance stopping them from abusing that.   Large corporations are a big part of this setting, and I think they especially are always scrambling to take over more and more territory and resources and the thought of an untapped area where no rule has been established is extremely enticing despite the danger.
