Fae

See the articles linked at the bottom of the article for entries on specific Fae

The Fae are a group of small humanoids found natively in Glitterstone Hollow. They are somewhat unusual in appearance, displaying a mix of human and insect attributes, they also produce unusual dust made from their loose wing scales, each species producing unique effects.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Fae are tiny humanoids standing at around 30cm tall as adults, Heather Pixies being the smallest at 15cm and Asrai reaching 35cm as the tallest fae. Each type of fae is equipped with insect-like wings, for example Fairies having wings similar to Birdwing Butterflies, Heather Pixies resembling Bee Flies and Asrai resembling Damselflies.

Their human-like bodies are very similar to that of humans, though featuring lighter bones and different skin colouring and patterns. They have a fairy feminine appearance and they display little sexual dimorphism, this being more noticeable on their wings.

Growth Rate & Stages

At birth, Fae are perfectly round glowing orbs wrapped within their wings, forming a protective shell. Within a few days, their wings slowly unravel, revealing their face below. Initially, their body consists of only their head and wings, the rest of their body growing over the span of a few months, starting with their hands and arms before the rest of their body emerges. By the age of around 5 months, this initial growth will have come to an end, after which they grow much slower until reaching physical maturity at around 15-16 years old.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

All Fae species are native to Glitterstone Hollow, though have spread to other worlds over time. They can usually be found living in rural areas on other worlds, preferring places that aren't interrupted by traffic and other noise during their midday naps. They are a rather common sight in Hihobea, the quiet nature of the local population complements the needs of many fae.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Fae have an enhanced set of senses compared to Humans, particularly their sight which is adapted to their crepuscular lifestyle making them highly effective in low light conditions. They are also very sensitive to air movements, this utilises microscopic hairs that cover their body and a pair of antenna on their forehead.

Civilization and Culture

Common Dress Code

Fae dress varies between each species and local subcultures, but the general trend is to dress in light and loose-fitting garments that don't restrict movement. While some just choose to wear simple wraps from plant fibre or animal wool, many take pride in their appearance and will wear tailored outfits. These outfits are typically custom-made and are fastened at the back, almost never pulled over the head, to avoid wing damage.   Those living outside of their valley home may change up their fashion to match their new environment or match the style of the locals. Those living in the Skyfolk homeworld deviate the furthest, wearing thick full-body outfits, stuffed with downy feathers to trap as much warmth as possible to allow comfot in a world that should be too cold for them.
