Meryl pressed her jaw into the cool metal pressed against her throat, and inhaled the smell of oil. You could tell a lot about a lady based on how she treated her guns. She was in good company.
Meryl Darling: "Well go ahead, baby. Blow my brains out."
Shalema: "For fuck sake, Meryl." Shalema pushed her away, and Meryl turned to get a proper look. Stark naked, soap still in her hair. Mid-shower, smelling like lilacs and licorice. Cheeks flushed. There was a vaguely... Unwordly quality to her. Like she wasn't all Lashunta. Of course, Meryl knew that she wasn't, but the visual evidence of that was in her daughter. Still, it didn't hurt to look... Shalema: "What do you want? I didn't call the Conclave."
Meryl Darling: "Can't I just be here for fun?" One of Shalema's eyebrows rose. Meryl waited for a response, but that delicate eyebrow won the staring contest. Meryl Darling: "Business call. You've been a little rockstar lately. Renovating Project 9, painting Kesh all over the walls. Now a Free Captain? It's attracted the interest of my employer."
Shalema: "Right... And what does he want?"
Meryl Darling: "He's requesting the Aga Jain make a pit stop..." Meryl let the sentence trail, the allure building in the atmosphere. Shalema -- being the eternal tease -- didn't bite. Meryl Darling: "Ukulam."
Shalema: "Project 9 already moved out of the Station. They're headquartered in Qabarat now."
Meryl Darling: "My, my. The Captain still keeps her ear to the ground... But Chess doesn't want you at that old haunt, baby. He wants you in the Ikal Expanse! Party's the 23rd, think you can manage?" Shalema hid her confusion well, but Meryl saw it in the tilt of her head, and the soap bubbles still dripping from her hair. There was a long pause as she thought it over -- likely conversing with Ololot. When she made up her mind, Shalema's voice was low, her tone cautious. Shalema: "What's the pay?"
