Eclipse Malkin Item in The Centurion's Riddle | World Anvil

Eclipse Malkin

The Eclipse Malkin is a legendary artifact wielded by Jestyr, which is said to be able to cut the fabric of space and time. It is described as being true black in appearance, with only the edges being well-defined. There is a distinct cat's head on the pommel, with an overall design that vaguely resembles those found in ancient Osirion.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The Eclipse Malkin is a personification of the Void, and thus defies the normal laws of creation. Before the Twilight War, when the Mirror was a quasi-ethereal barrier, the Malkin could cut direct passages back and forth from the Other Side, which was instrumental for the forces of Tyrnog. This ability was largely nullified after the One God solidified the Mirror, but the dagger still possesses a number of other powers.   Of note, Jestyr has found that killing an individual on one side also kills their Mirror, which punches a small hole through the barrier. Over time these holes can grow into large "cracks", and lead to a weakening of the whole structure. In these areas, the dagger can be used as it was designed, but this often draws the attention of the One God, making such journeys a one-way affair.   Outside of this core ability, the dagger is also impossibly sharp, capable of cutting through most other substances in a flash. This includes magic, enchantments, and even other artifacts -- with unique edge cases like the Staff of Whispers or the Mask of the One God being excluded. However, as the dagger is made of the Void, it is easily corrupted by the ideas of others, meaning attended items (like a sword held in an enemy's hand, or their armor) can often meet the dagger's edge without breaking. Therefore, a duel with the Malkin is as much a battle of wills as it is a martial affair, and thus those uncertain of themselves are swiftly cut down.   While largely conjecture, the writings of Flint Penumbra suggest that the Eclipse Malkin may change its appearance and some of its lesser properties based on who wields it, following the logic described above. This may have roots in history, as old depictions of Raemus often show him carrying a crook in his off-hand, instead of a dagger.

History

As far as modern historians can tell, the Eclipse Malkin has been in the hands of the Jester since the beginning of time, perhaps even in a world before this one. Crumbling depictions of the mad god can be found all over the galaxy, and few show the Jester without a blade on his belt. While typically represented as a dagger, some cultures -- notably the Elves of Sovyrian -- draw the Malkin as a carving or girldling knife (depending on whether the Jester is attacking Elves or nature, respectively). In recent events, the Jester used the Eclipse Malkin to kill Unari Dama and Thunder in the Mist at the Pact Summit, although neither event was successfully caught on camera.   To those familiar with the Entwined Infinities, the Eclipse Malkin is considered more of a tool than a weapon, although it can certainly be used to kill and maim. It was created by Raemus (and by proxy, the One God) during the Twilight War, and was designed to work in conjunction with the Staff of Whispers -- allowing one to open and close quick passages through the Mirror. It was infamously used to kill Raemus' Mirror (i.e. Delikul) during the final battle of the war, resulting in the first true Undead.   The Malkin disappeared from history until it returned in the hands of Korkul, a rogue agent of the Shade, who "gave" the dagger to Maximus Erebus, later revealed to be an aspect of Jestyr. It has been in his hands ever since, both when free of and possesed by the Jester's influence.
