Hugo Tanning, the man who fell

One day in The Depths, a man ran into one of the settlements on the edge of the main shaft of The Pit. He screamed, warning everyone of a pack of bear-like beasts rushing towards their homes. Without a question and out of the experience, people picked up their weapons, awaiting the attack. Not long after, the ground began to shake.   A pack of 5 bear-like creatures rushed in, destroying the walls of the settlement with their charge. The people opened fire on them, but their skin proved to be a tough target to pierce. Still, the bears fell, one after another. All, except their leader, twice the size of their brethren. It was shrugging off all of the attacks, be it bullets or spears. It managed to kill two people and now started moving towards one of the shooters, who positioned themselves near the edge of The Pit. As the creature was about to swipe its claws at the marksman, the man who ran into the village jumped at its neck, planning to stab it in the neck.   The jump threw the bear off balance, and both of them fell over the ledge.   As the two of them were falling, the bear hit one of the sewer pipes protruding out of one of the layers. The impact killed it instantly. The same hit, while cushioned by the bear's body, threw the man backwards. Thanks to that, he managed to land on one of the layers, although in lots of pain.   The people of the village, who saw it all happen, rushed down to treat his injuries. That day, Hugo Tanning, as was the man's name, became their hero and one of the few Pit-leapers.

The secret

Partially out of shame and partially out of fear of what would happen if they knew the truth, Hugo never told anyone that he was the one who woke up the bears by accident and lured them towards the settlement. Since then, he works as hard as he can, both with his combat experience and physical strength, to pay back for what he has done.
