Granny Ada's Home Diner

Just two layers above The City of Middlepoint there is a diner almost everyone in The Pit wants to visit at least once in their life. For a small price one can fill their stomach with a warm food filled with real granny's love.

Built by neighbors

The first time granny Ada chose the building to become her diner, it was still ugly and gray, with all of its windows broken, no gas, water or electricity. Still, she chose that building because it reminded her of the beanery her ma used to have. She and her boys had to cook using gas cylinders bought in Middlepoint. The beginnings were hard. Not only they had to go down two layers to resupply every so often, but even when she put out a sign in front of the building, most people feared to get close, thinking it might be a bandit ambush.   It all changed when a starving woman was going down to Middlepoint. At this point, she thought she could die at any moment. So she decided to risk it and visited her diner. The sight of her two grandsons terrified her, but again, she was too hungry to find another place. The meal that granny served her, the handmade pierogi with meat filling, was the best meal she had in her life since Awakening. She paid, and left for the Middlepoint.
A few days later while on her way back to the higher layers, she decided to visit the diner again. She thought that her last meal there was so delicious only because she was close to starving. But she wanted to be sure. Her astonishment was unparalleled when she discovered that the meals tasted as good as before. She decided to make the diner more known. The traveler was a member of a merchant guild. She used her contacts and resources to advertise granny Ada and her business.   But no one expected how effective that would be. More and more people started to show up, some offering their services as the payment. Soon, the diner had been renovated, and there's water, gas, and electricity. Merchants regularly restock all of the supplies and ingredients granny would need.
Even the streetlights on the layer have been fixed and people started to settle down there. Next to the Middlepoint, it became one of the safest areas of the Pit.

The building now

Outside

On the outside, the building has been insulated, connected to the grid, and repainted. The stairs leading to the first floor, where the diner is located (granny and her grandsons live on the ground floor), have been torn and replaced with new, strengthened metal ones. Window frames have been replaced and new window panes have been inserted. The whole building has been painted brown and white, giving it a little more of a rustic feeling. The roof has been fixed and a proper rain gutter has been installed.

Inside

Entering through the main door on the first floor, there are many things that can catch one's attention. The inside of the diner is heated, making it warm and cozy even on the coldest days. The walls are covered with wallpaper (Its lower half is dark green, the upper one is light green. There's a white stripe separating those two colors), while the floor is covered with hardwood.

Locker room

Just to the right, there is a small room with coat hangers and lockers, where one can leave their things safely. Usually, one of the two grandsons will sit at an angle that lets him see the inside of the locker room.

Dining area

Exiting the locker room and following the corridor, one will get to the dining area. There are enough tables and chairs to fit around 50 people. All of the chairs, tables, silverware, menus, and tablecloths have been hand-crafted by the people who were grateful to granny Ada. While the tables and chairs are made out of dark wood, and the menu covers are made out of leather similar in color to them, both the silverware and tablecloths are similar to the wallpapers here, with added floral patterns.

The kitchen

The last rooms that are on this floor serve as a kitchen and the pantry. Here's where the magic happens. Granny Ada's kitchen is equipped with the newest, most efficient kitchenware there is. For a long time, she had an electric stove, oven, and fridge large enough to store all of the perishable foods for a few days. Lately, as Elemental Crystals-based technology started to evolve, her stove and oven are now powered by Fire Crystals, the sink always has fresh cold water thanks to Water Crystals, and meat is kept in low temperatures thanks to Ice Crystals. Just as with other things, there are people ready to keep a steady supply for granny.

Babushka Ada

Granny Ada is an embodiment of everything positive one can come up with hearing the word "grandma" or "babushka". She's a small elderly woman hunched over by time. There's no single non-white hair on her head that she covers with red, flowery headwrap. She often wears a simple warm sweater and a long skirt. On colder days, she puts on her jacket, even though it never really gets cold inside her diner. During holidays, she wears her ornate folk dress. One smile appearing on her small face can melt the hearts of most of the people.
Just one piece of advice. Never mess with the granny Ada. You might think that her two boys would be the dangerous ones. And that's where you would make a great mistake. I once saw her pull out a Tommy gun on a bunch of guys who were getting quite rowdy and disruptive to other clients.

Her Grandsons

Everywhere granny Ada goes, there are two massive shadows following her. Wania and Jurij, her two "grandsons". As it is with everyone in the Pit, they probably aren't related to her in the slightest. But the two of them are. They are indistinguishable. Like two drops of water. Tall (over 2m), wide as a wardrobe, strong like elephants. And sharp as a sack of wet mice. They look like their whole bodies were made out of square-shaped rocks. Casually, they tend to wear tracksuits, but during holidays they try to wear something more formal. They both shave their hair, leaving only a blonde buzz cut. Granny Ada adopted them when others wanted to use their strength for themselves.   At first, the two of them tend to look very hostile. They don't talk much, and most of the people at this point are scared of them. But once they see that someone is good to their babushka, they start to open up. They have a lot of jokes only two of them understand, and they like to drink on their free days.

Holiday dishes

"You know what?" said The Spider. "She got me. In more ways than one."
He stopped for a smoke. "One day, she made me something special. It was simple but so good. She said it was for the anniversary of the first time I visited her. And I forgot about that. Me, someone who's known for knowing everyone's secrets, didn't remember that. Sometimes I wonder what would my life look like if I did a few different steps. But no matter what, I'd always respect a woman like her."
— Spider, to the corpse of someone who wanted to rob granny Ada.
