Black Pond Hospital

Down in The Depths, on their upper layers, where buildings of an unknown origin aren't yet replaced completely by a cave system, there's a three-story tall building that was discovered on the 5th year after Awakening. While from the outside it looked like a normal abandoned hospital, a group of researchers that decided to explore it discovered a true treasure inside. The backside of the building opened to a cavern which housed one of the biggest ponds filled with glistening algae known even today.

Capturing the area

If the building and the area surrounding it could be recaptured, it could easily become a fully functioning hospital once again. The main problem was the location. The Depths don't really belong to the safest areas of The Pit, and the tall ceiling of the layer only meant that the chance to encounter bigger monsters here was higher. And while it could be easily checked if any of them are currently in the area, it was unknown how long it would take for one of them to wander in. And being captured before the fortifications were complete could wipe out the whole team sent down there. So the settlers had to move quickly.   First, even before the main settler team made their move, a group of "cleaners" was dispatched to deal with smaller creatures and to hang the glow-filled lamps around the area to lower the chances of anything crawling back to the area. Then, engineers, builders, and guards moved in to fortify the area. Asides from two bigger threats that were quickly dealt with, the operation went smoothly.

Reopening the hospital

Once the building was safe enough to inhabit, its ground floor got turned into a living area. Not long after that, the second level of the building began to function as a hospital once again, and the third one became a research laboratory. Many people were sent down to the hospital, after hearing about the pond influenced by the healing properties of glistening algae. People brave enough to decide to go down to The Depths started flocking to the area. And with them, their money and resources.

Modifications and the birth of a fort

Soon, the number of people that wanted to live in the hospital exceeded its capacity. Once again, a few teams with a mission of capturing the surrounding area have been created. For the next year and a half, they cleaned out any threats in the surrounding buildings, built fortifications, and moved a little farther. Soon, the hospital became a heart of a pretty big fort consisting of at least 20 captured buildings.

Long-legged employees

Even before the current inhabitants of the area showed up here, the pond in the back of the hospital has its own denizens. The Stretcher Bugs chose this place for their nest, mainly due to the presence of the glistening algae, their favorite food. After people settled here, they domesticated the docile creatures. Their lives didn't change much. They are still well-fed whenever they want, and while once in a while they have to carry patients around the building, the whole area got way safer than before and they don't have to migrate out once in a while anymore.

Light Element concentration

While the cavern behind the hospital is affected enough by the Light Element that the glistening algae started showing up here, the concentration of the Element is low enough that the inhabitants of the area don't need to worry about Elemental Sickness. Even among the stretcher bugs, which mainly feed on said algae, the Light-infused variant hasn't shown up as of yet 10 years later.
