Milford Settlement in The Azure Sea | World Anvil

Milford

At its peak the pirate town of Milford was almost as populated as Monmurg, and it even rivalled that city in size and importance. It has been mentioned in almost every pirate fiction or story since the age of the buccaneers...   But you may not have heard the fascinating true story of this amazing place and the catastrophe that destroyed it. The town sits on a long thin peninsula that reaches out amongst the reefs of a large natural harbour on the island of Marlcroft Holm, and on one hot summers day in Goodmonth, 5779 AtD, half of the peninsula was sucked into the sea from a massive earthquake that liquified the sand.   First hand reports tell of people being sucked into the sand up to their heads, just to be eaten alive by dogs! A tsunami hit shortly after, causing even more chaos and destroying everything in its path. Many considered the quake to be the “terrible Judgement of Procan” for all the “ungodly debauched people” of the port.   Now, Milford, under the control of Governor Hanford of the Hold of the Sea Princes, has started to recover, though much of the peninsula on which it stands remains sunken beneath the waves.   As a pirate town the inhabitants come from every race and creed, though Kenku seem more populous here than is the norm.

Notable Features and Buildings

The Bordello
This low rent pleasure house in Milford stands on makeshift planks and rocks above a flooded island. It is the proverbial hive of scum and villainy!   Dockhouse
The Dockhouse of Milford guards the main docking port of the town, and the harbourmaster collects the Black Tax on behalf of the Hold of the Sea Princes. Due to the badly damaged harbour and the jagged reefs and remains of the old town, only three ships can dock at any one time, and they need an experienced pilot to make it in safely.   The Gallows
Standing on broken rocks above the waves of Milford Harbour, the Gallows is an unsavoury and dangerous tavern that only pays lip service to the Pirates' Code. It is usual for several deaths to occur here each week as arguments over booty and bravado are commonplace. Strangers are viewed with great suspicion.   Governor's Mansion
Governor Hanford of Milford resides in this large house. It is well guarded by several Kenku warriors, and whilst by no means a place of luxury, it is much better maintained than the majority of buildings in the storm-wrecked town.   Market Hall
This large hall inside Milford Fort is used as a place for trade and gambling, and the two are often interchangeable in Milford. Second-hand gear of ship parts and strange and unusual items can be found here.   Milford Fort
This central keep of the entire fort in the town of Milford remains mainly undamaged by recent events. It houses the town militia under the command of Governor Hanford. The fort as a whole has been constructed in the shape of a ship, and also houses the Market Hall and the Dockhouse.   Sunken Graveyard
This bonefield lies just west of the church in Milford. Due to the recent earthquake it sits at a horrible angle, sloping down to the south. This means that at least 80% of the interred graves and tombs are underwater.   Sureguard
Sureguard is the southernmost of two large rocky islands that guard the entrance to Milford Harbour. It is named for one of the intelligent swords wielded by the god Kelanen.   Swiftdoom
Swiftdoom is the northernmost of two large rocky islands that guard the entrance to Milford Harbour. It is named for one of the intelligent swords wielded by the god Kelanen.   Swiftdoom Chapel
This large church in Milford is dedicated to the god of duels, Kelanen, and is named for one of his swords. Broken stained glass litters the floor - left by the priests as reminders of the wrath of the gods. The congregation is often punctuated by bouts of drinking and fighting.
