Brathens (brah-thens)

The Brathens have a long and storied history as fierce warriors and nomads, tracing their roots back to tribes that once roamed the land. Despite their conversion to the Church Unconquered Sol, many Brathens still hold onto various pagan beliefs and rituals which are rumored to stem from Earthmother practices but this is without any real proof but wild stories.   In modern society, the Church views the Brathens' pagan beliefs as heresy and have condemned it. Many Brathens have had to practice their traditions in secret or risk persecution by the Church. This has led to a blending of pagan and Church beliefs though, with some Brathens incorporating Unconquered Sol practices and symbols into their pagan rituals.   The Brathens were originally a wandering nomad tribe known as Vordakai in their old tongue that lived in the surrounding wilderness of Markia. They were known for their fierce independence and their skill in living off the land. As Markia developed into a more centralized city-state, the Vordakai slowly began to come into contact with the city's merchants and traders, learning about commerce and the art of bartering. Over time, the Brathens began to adapt to city life, bringing with them their knowledge of the natural world, including their skill in herbalist practices. They became renowned for their knowledge of healing plants and their ability to cure illnesses with natural remedies. Some would remain in the city and intermingle with various other blood and would soon develop into the Brathens known today.   As they integrated into the city, the Brathens maintained their rough edges and independent spirit. They were respected for their knowledge and tolerated for their willingness to stand up for their beliefs, even in the face of opposition.   Despite becoming more integrated into a more civilized culture, the Brathens have not lost their ferocity and warrior spirit. Many Brathens are still trained in the arts of combat, and their natural strength and stamina make them fierce competitors in the gladiatorial arena. Some Brathens also work as mercenaries, offering their services to the highest bidder, while others serve as guards to the nobility. The Brathens also have a strong sense of honor and loyalty, and will not fight for any cause they do not believe in. This has earned them respect among many in Markia, and they are often sought after for their loyalty and determination.   Some Brathens have also found success as adventurers and explorers, using their skills in navigation and survival to venture into uncharted territories and discover new lands. Their knowledge of the natural world and ability to survive in harsh conditions makes them valuable members of expeditions and scouting parties. In addition to their naturalist skills, the Brathens have also developed a skill in commerce, with many members of the community owning small businesses and engaging in trade. They are known for their firm business acumen and their ability to negotiate favorable deals for themselves and business partners.   Another area of expertise for the Brathens is herbalism. They have a deep knowledge of the medicinal properties of plants and herbs, and use this knowledge to treat a variety of ailments. They have developed a range of poultices and salves that are highly valued throughout the city.     Social Stigma   The Brathens, with their extensive knowledge of herbalism and unique medicinal practices, have long been accused of consorting with fae entities or The Earthmother. These accusations date back to their days as a wildling barbarian tribe and have continued to follow them even after becoming civilized citizens of Markia. The Brathens have always vehemently denied them. Despite this, the stigma associated with these accusations has resulted in continued persecution of the Brathens to this day. Many people in Markia view the Brathens with suspicion and distrust, often making baseless accusations against them. To deal with this, the Brathens have developed a strong sense of community and solidarity, relying on each other for support in times of persecution. They have also become adept at protecting themselves and their interests, forming alliances with the Serrans and building relationships with those in positions of power.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The Brathens have their own language that has evolved over time from their barbarian roots, and they have had to adapt to the common tongue of Markia in order to participate in the city's society and commerce. This has resulted in a hybrid language that the Brathens use in their own communities and among family and friends. The Brathen language is characterized by a guttural pronunciation and an emphasis on practicality and directness, while the hybrid language incorporates elements of the common tongue and is more fluid and expressive. Despite the prevalence of the hybrid language in daily life, the Vordakai language remains alive in some of the older generation.

Common Dress code

The Brathens have a cultural dress code that reflects their history as a nomadic people who hunted and lived off the land. They wear garments made from animal hides, furs, and leather, decorated with intricate embroidery and metalwork. The clothing is often practical and designed for movement, with layers for warmth and protection against the elements. Their dress incorporates aspects of their devotion to their interpretation of the sun god. They often wear bright colors and patterns, reflecting the sun's warmth and light. They also wear accessories such as sun-shaped pendants, earrings, and bracelets, as symbols of their reverence for the deity.   As the Brathens have become more integrated into the city, their dress has adapted to the urban environment. They still wear traditional garments, but they also incorporate elements of more modern clothing styles. Their dress now blends their cultural heritage with a more contemporary fashion sense but still carries undertones of a former lifestyle.

Foods & Cuisine

The Brathens are known for their special fermented drink called "Koros", which is a type of mead made from honey, water, and wildflowers. It has a sweet and floral flavor with a hint of tartness from the fermentation process. Traditionally, Koros is reserved for special occasions and celebrations, such as weddings and harvest festivals. The Brathens believe that sharing Koros is a sign of generosity and hospitality, and it is often used now to forge alliances with new family members and close allies.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

The Brathens hold traditional gender roles in their society from their nomad roots, with men expected to be the primary providers and protectors of their families, while women are expected to tend to the fields, homes, and children. However, this does not mean that women are considered inferior or unable to perform other roles in society. In fact, Brathen women are often highly respected for their wisdom and are valued for their contributions to the community. They are often skilled in herbalism and midwifery, and are considered the caretakers of the home and community.   Men, on the other hand, are expected to be strong and skilled warriors, protectors of their families and communities, and providers through hunting, labor, and trading. They are also expected to be leaders and decision-makers in their households and communities they live in, whether some may like it or not.
