Comhairle nan Dia

Overview

The Comhairle nan Dia are the deities that are worshiped and heeded by Baegir. They are connected more to the natural and spiritual world. All of them are represented in the temples and clans, each having their own role and play in the natural order. There are many different gods that cover many different aspects of life, from death, honor, duels, the fey, magic, leadership, among many others. It is argued that the Comhairle nan Dia may well be one of the largest pantheons to exist.  

The Gods

With so many deities to their pantheon, overlap is almost guaranteed. However, just because two gods might share the same domains do not mean that they utilize it in quite the same way as others. Instead, they may take a different perspective or apply some form of twist to it that makes them unique to others.  

Siroria, The Fey Queen

The Enchantress, Siroria, the Fey Queen is a mystical deity to the Baegir. While not evil, she is perceived as a trickster spirit who preys on the weak-willed and those who venture too far into her sacred forest, Eli'varyn. Despite this, pilgrims and warriors still make trips into her land to offer tribute and to test their will. Sometimes, however, it is used as a form of exile or banishment. It is said that those who make it to her grove at the center are given the opportunity to be born anew, for better or for worse.   Domains:

Thannus, Lord of the Winds

Thannus, Lord of the Winds and herald of the storm. He stands tall upon a mountain, banner raised to the sky as he points his sword down towards the ground. He is the one who conjures the gales and storms that sweep through the highlands and lowlands both, with his bird's eye view he can see all of the land laid before him. Providing rain and cover, or perhaps causing lightning to strike. Many burn four Stormwing Flowers each year, one for each season to try to protect their land from his gaze.   Domains:

Scathach, The Highland Shieldbearer

Many warriors look up to, and and both admire and fear the one they call Scathach, The Highland Shieldbearer. She is a legendary warrior of the highlands, who many travel alone through the hills hoping to find her and be trained by her. It is said that her training makes one unmatched on the battlefield, becoming legendary warriors, kings, warlords, and unifiers. Individuals of such great martial prowess that it is said they can fell entire armies by themselves. This is, of course, mostly legend. However, many of the greatest warriors throughout the age have bared her mark, a tattoo that is very identifiable on their back.   Domains:

Cailleach, The Worldbreaker

Legend says that one day, Cailleach, The Worldbreaker will descend upon the world, leading a legion of all the warriors who died in disgrace and all of those who committed evil without repentance. Marching them across the world and leaving nothing but ash in their wake. Cailleach is seen by many to be the aspect of pure sin and disgrace, and that he will end the world when the tribes forget their traditions and forsake their Gods. Luckily, despite the passing of time, the Baegir still venerate those ancient spirits and gods who showed them kindness all those ages ago.   Domains:

Scarabrae, The World Tree

The Baegir believe in one unifying force behind all life, Scarabrae, The World Tree. Said to exist in a realm adjacent to the material, it is a massive tree that feeds life into the material plane. Scarabrae is venerated as the giver of all life and the ideals behind preserving it. It is said that many Wylnakin live within it, offering peace and happiness to all who approach with good intent. At the heart of the World Tree lies three pools. The Basin of Life, Magic, and Fate, taking a sip from even one has the power to rend the mortal form asunder, the raw energy and power contained within too much for any mere mortal to comprehend or contain. Instead, they simply have their fates destroyed entirely, wiping them from existence.   Domains:

Mathelas, The Hermit

One of the more obscure deities of the Baegir, Mathelas, The Hermit is known by name different names, but most just called him 'The Wanderer' as he travels from place to place. He is the patron of those who live on the roads and survive in the wild. He is often depicted as an older man in a brown leather cloak and robe. Seeming decrepit and barely able, any who try to take advantage of him or rob him are met with a swift end. While those who take in and travel with this seemingly incapable old man are said to be protected by the worst of the weather on their journey, before he seems to disappear overnight from their camp.   Domains:

Gaul, Warrior-King

Many tribal leaders pay homage specifically to Gaul, Warrior-King more of a venerated ancestor than a deity in many of their eyes. Gaul represents the first king to sit on a throne in the The Stormswept Foothills. In many ways, he is the kingmaker of the Baegir. Any self-respecting chief, lord, or king would be right to venerate and pay homage to him. Many suspect that Gaul was, in fact, a giant who descended from the mountains with his people to populate the foothills, and over time, as they mixed with the humans who lived there, slowly became the present residents of the area.   Domains:

Baersonling, Aspect of the Bear

The aspects play an important part of the warrior-paths of the Baegir. Baersonling, Aspect of the Bear is a massive grizzly with a ferocious maw. However, hardly violent until disturbed, protecting its den with its thick fur and hide. Baersonling is the aspect associated with the more strength-based warriors, your buckler and armor types, but also those who swing their weight around behind a massive two-hander. The warriors who pay homage to him are both protective but also, if antagonized, can be whipped into a battle-frenzy that rivals the Valnir berserkers.   Domains:

Madadh-allaidh, Aspect of the Wolf

Madadh-allaidh, Aspect of the Wolf, the aspect associated with all those who prefer to fight lighter on their feet. The warriors that pay homage to the wolf tend to favor dual-weapon fighting styles or more agile weapons in general. Madadh-allaidh themselves is a large wolf with a bristling hide, always flanking and fighting a weak spot in their prey before striking with all the viciousness they can muster, and their warriors tend to do the same. Those devoted to this path are far more roguish and prefer to find weak spots in an enemy's defense before striking.   Domains:

Seabhac Roghnaithe, Aspect of the Hawk

Many Baegir favor melee weapons, however, many also do prefer to use bows or even crossbows to either hunt or sometimes to support their fellow warriors from afar. While these warriors are often capable in a close fight, they prefer ranged weapons and pay homage to Seabhac Roghnaithe, Aspect of the Hawk. A large hawk who is said to often fly over a battlefield before the armies meet, gazing down at the combatants, its vision able to pierce even the darkest of shadows and decipher strategies in moments. This is, of course, why many strategists also pay homage to the Aspect of the Hawk.   Domains:

Rádala Saori, Aspect of the Hare

Being in the foothills, with many defensible locations and spots to hide, it is not uncommon for Baegir warriors to choose Rádala Saori, Aspect of the Hare to guide their warrior-path. Rádala Saori is the patron of skirmishers and scouts. Those who are light on their feet, able to hit-and-run, and ambush. Those who dedicate to the hare often favor lighter equipment, slings, sometimes javelins in order to quickly move and harass their enemies with impunity. However, Rádala Saori also favors scouts, those with a keen sight or who might need to alert nearby friends of incoming foes.   Domains:

Rí na gCrann, The Greybough

Sometimes, one might go into the forests alone, seeking answers. By chance alone, they might encounter Rí na gCrann, The Greybough. An ancient tree spirit with the knowledge of the ages, and answers to every question man might have. An old and wizened tree who has been around since the dawn of time. There is no single location one might encounter this ancient tree of wisdom, instead, it is said that when all you have is questions, a lone venture into the woods may hold all your answers. Greybough is depicted as an old and wizened tree, whose branches are yet sturdy, but its leaves are faded with time and knowledge of even the worst of mankind.   Domains:

Bhean-naomh, The Spirit Guide

Even the Baegir need someone to help guide their souls into the afterlife. That duty falls solely upon Bhean-naomh, The Spirit Guide. Bhean-naomh has the very complex job of guiding all who die to their afterlife. Be it a regal forest protected by the fey, or perhaps to the Hells, as their souls were claimed by a devil through some nefarious pact. Of course, Bhean-naomh does all of the transportation themselves, they are assisted in the material plane by Stiùir who preform the proper funerary rites to help ensure they are taken on a swift and safe journey to their final resting place.   Domains:

Brisngr, The Smoldering Giant

It is said that Gaul had a brother, Brisngr, The Smoldering Giant. In fact, when Gaul came down from the mountains to settle The Stormswept Foothills, it is said Brisngr stayed. He saw his brother's new people prospering and building a home for themselves which only grew resentment. Now, Brisngr is a scourge to the Baegir. His resentment grew so hateful and malicious that he become molten rock and stone, lava now forming his veins. Despite his goal to destroy the tribes, however, many still flock to his banner, usually outcasts and rejects who were exiled from their clans and tribes, calling themselves The Firesworn.   Domains:

Halifax, Winged Terror

Sometimes, even the noble Baegir need a night terror, a boogeyman to keep them inside. That would be Halifax, Winged Terror, the sneering bat. Halifax is a wretched winged, clawed beasts, skin stretched over bones and a sneer on its face. Some legends say that Halifax was once the Aspect of the Bat. However, as people decided that sneaking into a camp and killing was not honorable, no matter the foe. Halifax slowly grew more and more resentful of the tribes that once embraced and cherished them in their society. Some, however, still devote themselves to the Aspect of the Bat, calling themselves Llafhar, earning both Halifax's favor and the fear from their kin.   Domains:

Nattahlias, Tender of the Glade

With herbalism being an important part of Baegir society, many of them look towards Nattahlias, Tender of the Glade to provide them guidance for new ways to cure diseases or perhaps heal a grievous wound. Many shamans and medicine men give offerings to Nattahlias in hopes that some form of esoteric knowledge might be bestowed upon them so that they can aid their village in some form. Nattahlias is, to many, an ancestral medicine man responsible for many of their modern remedies and healing techniques and is still venerated by healers of all kinds today.   Domains:

Menhir, The Fallen Mountain

There are many myths, creatures, and legends that surround the are that the Baegir call home. None quite so prominent as the story of Menhir, The Fallen Mountain. Said to be a massive elemental of stone and rock, Menhir was struck down by the heavens, crashing down with such force that the very land of The Stormswept Foothills is said to be on top of the fallen body of Menhir. It is said that when Cailleach walks the world, Menhir will rise from the ground once more, carrying upon it the warriors who should do battle with Cailleach's legion.   Domains:

Atahbadh, Dawnbringer

If ever an angel or celestial figure would be depicted in Baegir society, it would be Atahbadh, Dawnbringer, the blade of radiant justice. Atahbadh is depicted as a winged creature, though with more sharp and hawkish features. A gaze that is said to be able to judge a mortal at a mere glance, determining if they are honorable or disgraceful. Many believe that when the end of the world comes, it is Atahbadh that will lead an army of the greatest honorable warriors in history against Cailleach. Though, many older seers who look to the most ancient prophecies believe that Atahbadh is simply fated to lose the fight and that when Cailleach comes, the end is inevitable.   Domains:

Stogail, The River Troll

Stogail, The River Troll is a unique deity. Said to be an intelligent troll who travels along the River Fehyr, collecting fish and plants. Unlike most other trolls, Stogail is very passive and tends not to pick fights, preferring instead to keep to itself and not bother with mortals who might seek to exploit it. It is said that Stogail is the most knowledgeable about everything in the water, and that if they are feeling particularly generous will transport a friend along the River far faster than any boat. However, it is said that those who make enemies of Stogail are often attacked by vicious creatures who dwell in the riverbeds.   Domains:

Chaidh Dóiteáin, Radiant King

Most Baegir follow the warrior-paths of the aspects, swearing oaths of loyalty to their chiefs. However, some follow the teachings of Chaidh Dóiteáin, Radiant King, considered a sword-saint by many, purifying and cleansing the land of the evil, malevolent, and outsider spirits that threaten the sanctity of The Stormswept Foothills. His followers dub themselves Zaestyrn, an order of sword saints who dispense a sort of vigilante justice, both to evil creatures but also to anyone violating the laws of the land.   Domains:

Kastelegos, Mystic Weaver

A kindly old man who lives in a stone tower overlooking the land, Kastelegos, Mystic Weaver. A man of many talents, and yet he focuses on two; magic and artistry. To many, he is seen as the god of magic, as from time to time he will teach an aspiring mage some of his talents and ideals before sending them off, and so, many seek him out. Unfortunately, however, very few manage to find him before meeting their ends at the hands of the creatures who dwell in the mountains. It is said that he is the one who is responsible for weaving the fabric of magic, connecting it all so that it has a level of stability and isn't all wild and tempestuous.   Domains:

Ealawaith, The Grave Spirit

Being a superstitious culture, many Baegir believe that everyone deserves a proper burial or at least to be laid to rest in some form. This is only reinforced by Ealawaith, The Grave Spirit who many tell was the wife of a Chief whose clan was attacked and overturned, her being the only one not laid to rest by their people or their conquerors. Now, she drifts around gravesites and battlefields, haunting the land with a heavy mist and a banshee wail that might make even the most stone-faced warrior turn pale in fear.   Domains:

Amonhir, The Malevolent Mountain

There is a volcano within the lands of The Stormswept Foothills that erupts often enough to encourage the superstitious nature of its people. This is called Milabh Ruch, believed to be the home of, or perhaps simply is Amonhir, The Malevolent Mountain, a shard of Menhir said to be an essence of pure rage and destruction from when the great mountain was originally struck down. Many, however, still go to the 'Malevolent Mountain' in hopes to appease the angry mountain spirit so that it might not bring its wrath to bear, with little success however.   Domains:

Edanbough, Lifeblood

There is one spot within The Stormswept Foothills that is so sacred that almost no one is allowed to enter. It is called The Grove of Ancestor Spirits where it is said that the last few of the Threakin reside. It is guarded by the fiercely loyal Spirit Walkers. One of the other residents of the grove is Edanbough, Lifeblood said to be an ancient creature whose blood gave life to the ancient forests of the region. Many druids pay homage to him, both for his life-giving powers but also due to his deep connection with all aspects of nature.   Domains:

Wishildaur, Blade of Malice

If any slight proves too great for the Baegir they will turn to Wishildaur, Blade of Malice, offering a sacrifice to them for the chance for revenge, or perhaps, for a curse to be placed upon them. The greater the slight, the bigger the sacrifice. Of course, not everyone will use the powers of Wishildaur, in fact, for most it is frowned upon. However, that has often not stopped a large amount of people from making these sacrifices. However, there is a risk involved, for if you make a sacrifice against one who has not wronged you, it is said that the curse will instead be placed upon yourself.

Manfoedd, The Were-Father

Even amongst the folklore and legends of the Baegir exists werebeasts and creatures of the night. Those attuned to, or perhaps cursed by the full moon. They are all considered to be children of Manfoedd, The Were-Father, willing or not. Manfoedd is largely considered to be a mostly evil, but none-the-less important and connected nature spirit. In many ways, Manfoedd embodies the hunt despite his more otherwise dark and grim nature. He is said to be able to take the form of any werebeast he so desires.   Domains:

Damodded, The Balanced Scales

In the courts of law in the The Stormswept Foothills exists many who might preside over the hearings. Usually chieftains or other important tribal leaders. No matter who is chosen to make the final ruling on any matter, they always strive to do it fair and justly under the tenants of Damodded, The Balanced Scales. Damodded is considered by many to be an arbiter of justice and fairness throughout the land, and the scales are seen as the universal symbol amongst the Baegir to represent the tenants of justice.   Domains:

Jaspyre, Lord of the Deep

When outsiders hear of Jaspyre, Lord of the Deep they often believe it to be a deity associated with waters and the beings who dwell below. Instead, Jaspyre is dedicated to everything under the ground. From the glittering gems and the shiny ores, to the denizens that lurk within and around them. Given their penchant for all things shiny, many believe that Jaspyre might have a particular fondness for Goblins, especially since they tend to dwell in dark areas. Because of this, many metallurgists and smiths also pay homage to Jaspyre, as do many jewelcrafters as they associate well with the Lord of the Deep.   Domains:

Venaomh, Peacebringer

When war has pushed the people to their limits, resources are stretched thin, many rally behind Venaomh, Peacebringer. An oddity amongst the Baegir as they are willing, in many cases, to fight to the last man. However, Venaomh represents far more than the simple ideals of peace, it represents the prosperity, creativity, and industry that accompanies it. The Baegir are by no means bloodthirsty or warmongers, they actually prefer peace over fighting when they can manage it, but threats necessitate that they are always ready to march to war.   Domains:

Gachmodoedd, The Painter

Gachmodoedd, The Painter is a very obscure and unknown deity. It is said that they are the ones responsible for creating The Acrmyr, a magical and mystical painting of a landscape that one can step within and experience the world of. Many aspire to their level of artistic perfection, even if their methods are dubious and esoteric at best. Gachmodoedd while given special reverence by painters, is also venerated by other artists of the lands. Be they potters, statue builders, or perhaps practice a different more obscure art form.   Domains:
