Saeaan
Saeaan is Aethis's largest continent. Located northwest of Isaana, the landmass stretches from the Akol'eslan - the ice-lands - to the north, to the equatorial territories of Avrai and Narlenya. East to west, it extends approximately a quarter of the way around the planet.
Geography
Being an exceedingly large continent, Saeaani geography is highly diverse. It encompasses vast open tundras and prairies in the north and northeast, forest and deserts to the south, and temperate grasslands and woods along the eastern and southwestern coasts, in addition to the usual abundance of deserts and scrublands that cover a large percentage of the planet. The continent is also home to several long mountain ranges, forming its 'spine' from east to west and several curving 'ribs' from north to south. To the far north, beyond the northernmost of the Spirit Mountains, on the polar fringes of the barren akol-eslan or Ice-lands, Saeaan is also host to the terrestrial portion of the Aethi northern polar ice cap: seemingly boundless expanses of ice shelves and glaciers stretching into the bitter cold emptiness of Aethis's Aldyi Ocean, where chunks occasionally slough off and tumble into open water as rough bergs and wide sheet ice.
History
Though the idea is still occasionally contested, the general scientific consensus is that the true origin of the Aethi is the continent of Saeaan - specifically, an area of dense and warm red-leaf forests in what is now southern Narlenya, on or near the banks of the Kalye river. However, these primordial Aethi apparently did not migrate far along the coasts or far into the interior of Saeaan, likely because of relatively hostile environments and lack of traditional food sources. Instead, offshoots of the Kalye River progenitor culture somehow managed to migrate across the sea to the hospitable northeast shores of Isaana, becoming the direct ancestors of the modern Isaani people. Only much later did Aethi learn to tame the more barren wilds and establish nomadic or stationary lives on other parts of the continent.
Beginning in the century preceding the First Esonar War and continuing through modern times, the southern parts of the continent have become greatly populous and productive, feeding and supplying much of the core of the Aethi Imperium via huge industrial cities, spaceports, and mining facilities, giant aeroponic grow towers, and multitudes of conventional farms and ranches. Large parts of the north have remained exceedingly traditional, however, despite the passage of the centuries and the continuing efforts of the Imperium to unify the planet.
