Viarai
Viarai, capital city of Aethis and of the Imperium as a whole, is a city built on a circular artificial island east of the Vani Peninsula on the the east coast of Isaana.
Government
The Viarai City area is designated as a 'Special District' within the Aethi Imperium, considered separate from the semi-autonomous nation of Isaana. Much like the off-world Imperial territories, Viarai is governed by an elected council, which is subordinate to the Aethi Council and the Imperial throne. However, due to the immediate presence of those two higher entities, their influence on local policy and the day-to-day running of government tends to be far greater than is typical.
Defences
The perimeter of the island of Viarai itself is circled by two wings of Imperial atmospheric combat craft, and surrounded by levitating sentry turrets, surveillance and combat drones, and an immense array of powerful force shield emitters.
History
Viarai City's construction was announced and officially ordered by the first Arana, Athad Irias'keior, in 21 AY. The seabed nearby was dredged up, and the sand was piled up to form the new island of Viarai, a process which was completed - after some delays - in 23 AY. The planned buildings and districts were then built, beginning with the Arana's residence, a tall, curved, split tower known as the Il'Dasar or Shining Tower(s).
The city officially opened on the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Imperium in 30 AY.
Architecture
The architecture of the original buildings of Viarai City is an orderly juxtaposition of ancient, modern, and 'futuristic' styles originating from all parts of the planet Aethis. As the Imperium expanded, new Viari buildings began to incorporate alien styles from within the Imperium as well: angular, spacecraft-inspired "ki Ktalik" architecture from Veridias Prime, the seamless wavelike forms of modern Setai'irig construction, and more.
Geography
The artificial island Viarai is built on is situated approximately 1.5 kilometers from the Isaani coast. It is perfectly circular, and is gently terraced, with concentric levels becoming higher and higher from the coast to the centre of the island.
