Scholars classify the Chasmere as one of the Infinite Elemental Planes, though its nature is neither elemental in the traditional sense nor easily compared to the realms of flame, frost, or stone. Known by its formal epithet, the Plane of Interiority, the Chasmere represents the cosmic principle that every object, thought, and living being possesses an inner space. It is the manifestation of what lies within: the hollow, the hidden, the unfilled, and the unspoken.
Travel to the Chasmere reveals a landscape that defies expectations of what a cavern ought to be. Cavities arise without cause, forming first as empty volumes around which matter slowly condenses. Walls of stone, bone, fungus, or stranger substances gather as if drawn to the void, attempting to seal or shape it. These formations are unstable over time, as hollows shift their position or distort in shape, forcing the surrounding matter to rearrange itself. The result is an ever-changing domain of chambers, tunnels, and interior expanses, each formed in response to the hollow at its heart.
Sound behaves as a force of unusual significance in this plane. Echoes do not behave merely as reflections but as lingering impressions, capable of carrying memory or intent long after the source has passed. Tassium deposits attuned to thoughts, spirits, or entropy sometimes form in these regions, suggesting a natural resonance with schools such as Cerebrumancy, Spectromancy, and Anarchionomy.
A number of peoples trace their origins or cultural ancestry to this plane. Among them, certain elven offshoots known in some texts as the hollowborn maintain oral traditions describing ancestral migrations from the Chasmere into the deep places of Teramore. Their architecture, customs, and magical practices reflect a strong affinity for inner space, echo, and emotional reserve, though much of their history remains shrouded in secrecy.
Though rarely visited and difficult to navigate, the Chasmere remains a subject of fascination for scholars of planar metaphysics. To some, it represents the cosmos’s reminder that every structure has an interior, and that every interior has its own truths. The plane is regarded as neither hostile nor welcoming, but rather introspective by its very nature, revealing as much about the traveler as it does about itself.
