Chasmere (Kaz-meer)

Plane of Interiority

Scholars classify the Chasmere as one of the Infinite Elemental Planes, though its nature is neither elemental in the traditional sense nor easily compared to the realms of flame, frost, or stone. Known by its formal epithet, the Plane of Interiority, the Chasmere represents the cosmic principle that every object, thought, and living being possesses an inner space. It is the manifestation of what lies within: the hollow, the hidden, the unfilled, and the unspoken.

Travel to the Chasmere reveals a landscape that defies expectations of what a cavern ought to be. Cavities arise without cause, forming first as empty volumes around which matter slowly condenses. Walls of stone, bone, fungus, or stranger substances gather as if drawn to the void, attempting to seal or shape it. These formations are unstable over time, as hollows shift their position or distort in shape, forcing the surrounding matter to rearrange itself. The result is an ever-changing domain of chambers, tunnels, and interior expanses, each formed in response to the hollow at its heart.

Sound behaves as a force of unusual significance in this plane. Echoes do not behave merely as reflections but as lingering impressions, capable of carrying memory or intent long after the source has passed. Travelers often report their own words returning to them hours later, softened or altered in ways that suggest the plane reshapes sound according to its own logic. Silence is uncommon and regarded with caution, for it implies a hollow so complete that even resonance cannot survive within it.

Light enters the Chasmere but rarely fills space as it should. It travels in thin, precise lines, illuminating narrow paths while leaving the surrounding areas in deep dimness. Natural and magical luminance tends to ring around the edges of hollows, outlining their shapes rather than dispelling the gloom. For this reason, many native creatures and societies rely on bioluminescence or echo-sense rather than sight.

The living ecology of the plane, where observed, follows principles similar to its geography. Flora and fungal growths thrive in the margins of hollows, shaped by sound, vibration, or emotional residue. Fauna tend to possess adaptations to navigate the uncertain interior architecture of the realm, and many species rely on resonance or internal voids to communicate, hunt, or defend themselves. Scholars caution that the plane itself often displays semi-sentient qualities, with certain vast caverns behaving like living organisms whose rhythms can be felt in the shifting of walls or changes in air pressure.

The Chasmere’s influence on the Prime Materium is subtle but persistent. Deep caverns in the world often mirror the plane’s qualities: unusual echo patterns, emotional impressions in the air, or cavern systems that seem to shift over generations. Places long forgotten or sealed away tend to resonate with its nature, and planar cartographers argue that such sites represent the thinnest boundaries between our world and the Chasmere. Tassium deposits attuned to thoughts, spirits, or entropy sometimes form in these regions, suggesting a natural resonance with schools such as Cerebrumancy, Spectromancy, and Anarchionomy.

A number of peoples trace their origins or cultural ancestry to this plane. Among them, certain elven offshoots known in some texts as the hollowborn maintain oral traditions describing ancestral migrations from the Chasmere into the deep places of Teramore. Their architecture, customs, and magical practices reflect a strong affinity for inner space, echo, and emotional reserve, though much of their history remains shrouded in secrecy.

Though rarely visited and difficult to navigate, the Chasmere remains a subject of fascination for scholars of planar metaphysics. To some, it represents the cosmos’s reminder that every structure has an interior, and that every interior has its own truths. The plane is regarded as neither hostile nor welcoming, but rather introspective by its very nature, revealing as much about the traveler as it does about itself.
