"Ask yourselves this: would you rather stand for the weak-willed 'rulers' of this world who allowed their homes to fall so quickly to a solitary foreign invader, or for the invader who had the strength to overtake that planet, the leader who was not afraid to claim what should have been his all along, the messiah imbued with the strength of the Dragon Queen, molded from the very elements that molded your world? Would you rather die knowing you fought for an unworthy cause, or live knowing that you might share in the immense power I can bring to this world? Ask yourselves that, and you may some day see the light of your precious sky once more."
~Excerpt from The Book of Lost Souls
Writing System
Modern Abyssal is written using the Common Alphabet, with an additional diacritic for long vowels. In The Abyss, Abyssal is written in its own alphabet, though it is said that any mortal who so much as glances at the letters will lose their sanity. For this reason, Abyssal is transliterated into the Common Alphabet by powerful mages who can withstand the effects of the original alphabet.

As Abyssal is descended from Celestial, its word order is most typically Object-Subject-Verb, though in practice there is some variation, especially in epic poems such as The Book of Lost Souls. Prepositions are used in favor of postpositions, and adjectives tend to be placed after the noun that they modify, though these "rules" too are frequently broken. Rising intonation and subject-auxiliary inversion are used in the formation of questions.
